I dunno what passes for chip shops in That London these days, they had some damn fool ideas last I looked. However, I do know that one of the single most disappointing chippy teas I've ever had was from the "world famous" Harry Ramsden's. They're an offence to their trade. Frozen chips, for god's sake!

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria...

No i tried their chicken spicy meals though, pretty nice.

Kettle chips all the way for me. I don't eat crisps too often so don't mind the price.

Its a bit like a group of northern blokes forsaking an evening of ale, darts and whippets to attend a contemporary dance event!

Attend? We could stage one. A clog-stomping exploration of the pub snack. I'll bring a pickled egg.

The biggest differences I found between UK and US crisps were a) packet size - they only really do unfeasibly huge bags - and b) lack of flavour varieties.

The vast majority of US crisps are ready salted, and various cheese / steak / barbeque variants. Oh, and 'paprika', randomly. You can get salt & vinegar but it's nowhere near as ubiquitous as here.

In my experience, etc etc.

No one seems to have mentioned the fact that Cheese n onions crisp packets should be green not blue. I refuse to eat cheese n onion crisps from a blue bag. I have some principles. according to wikipedia Golden Wonder launched the cheese & onion crisp flavour in 1962 In a GREEN packet. Somewhere down the line Walkers did the old switcharoo, for which they will never be forgiven. Kids these days think C & O are in a blue bag, the idiots!

Not only that, but they swapped places with salt & vinegar. S&V in a green packet, I ask you. #firstworldproblems

How did Golden Wonder lose such a massive market share to Walkers in the '80's? Walkers came from nowhere and suddenly Golden Wonder were way down the rankings.

How about corn tortillas, do they count?

I've always wondered that, given that their crisps were utter baggins until they bought Smith's. Mind you, so were Golden Wonder's.

Whatever happened to Bensons? Crown Crisps, that was where it was at.

I believe the sale of tiny satin football shorts went up during this period too.

Beef n onion = brown. that makes complete sense. But have you ever seen a blue onion? have yoooouuu??? Red, blue, green, brown, pink. That is the whole spectrum of crisps. That's all you need. It all went wrong with the introduction of Ham n mustard IMHO.

Cheese and onion in blue packets? Madness! Wars have been started over less! It's where the rot set in in our society!

Taken to it's logical conclusion, Gary Linaker and his skimpy satin shorts were responsible for last weeks rioting! Probably

Ah, but they've fixed that now, with Mega Monster Munch.

Wagon Wheels, now there's a 'kin crime against snacking. Roller skate wheels more like.

...and what happened to Outer Spacers eh?

Like little MDF star fishes that tasted like licking the hand rails in a chemical plant. 6p a bag. I lived off them.

Gone. Like part of my childhood has been erased. I blame George Lucas.

1. Flavour - Salt & Vinegar is best - Fact

2. Brand - Seabrooks

3. Packaging - BLUE
I would rather stick red hot needles in my eyes than eat cheese & onion crisps. Whoever (at that other company) was responsible for putting them in a blue bag is a sick man.

4. Butty (Optional) - white sliced. No butter.

has anybody made a ready-reckoner that displays crisp flavours vs colours used, split by manufacturer?

I really think if its not there we should make one, and start sorting this mess out for the Tories.

These are good:

I like Tyrell's too - especially the sea salt and cider vinegar. The cider vinegar tastes great.

Big fan of Seabrook, even if they have some iffy flavours. A bit of grease won't kill you, you big ponce.

Walkers though. Awful. Slice thickness is far too ethereal, may as well be made out of paper, no potato flavour. With the exception of the Worcester sauce, the flavours ming.

Golden Wonder. Rare round here, every packet I've had tasted stale.

Red Mill Quarter Backs. American Cheeseburger flavour.

The BEST 15p you'll ever spend.

Mod's - may as well close this one down now.

right. google hasn't turned up anything so lets go.

first off, plain old crisps and salt.

Ready salted, lightly salted or just salted? Got to be a red packet.

Next, Salt and Vinegar.

No poncy balsamic or cider vinegar allowed, just plain old vinegar. got to be a blue packet i'm afraid. Interestingly Walkers use blue for salt and vinegar fench fries.

Thirdly, Cheese and onion.

Green bag, no variant on the onion or cheese - theres no need to be too specific.

i've actually bored myself writing this.

Prawn Cocktail has to be pink.

I used to think Prawn Cocktail crisps were exotic, but then I grew up on an East End council estate, not Grimsby where apparently prawns are a staple food...

No they bloody well don't. Salt and vinegar FFs come in a green pack. C&O FFs in a blue pack.

There are only a couple of acceptable exceptions to the flavour/colour rule for crisp packets. This is acceptable for prawn cocktail

[img] [/img]

and this for blue packets that aren't salt and vinegar

[img] [/img]

Interestingly, while googling that I found these

[img] [/img]

Has anyone tried them? Look promising 😀

And if you eat 6 packets in a row they make you vom.

Yeah. It's not the first time I've wondered if someone's being serious in (somewhat foolishly) taking me seriously. They say a large percentage of communication is non-verbal; so on the Internet where you lose all the subtle nuances it's really easy to be taken the wrong way.

Tuckshop-Tastic!

That reminds me of our tuckshop staple, Potato Puffs. 10p got you a bag containing mostly air; the savvy kids crushed up the bag before offering it around, so that it was impossible for someone to take more than a pinch of crisps.

Lot of tosh being talked on this thread.... these are the one & only king.
Walkers in Smoky bacon flavour, though Walkers C&O, RS or S&V are acceptable if the king is not available.

All other crisp manufacturers are imposters.
Doritos, kettle chips, expanded corn puff's are not crisps, all IMHO of course.

Agreed that Walkers take some beating but Smokey Bacon, that's down with their Roast Chicken as one to avoid.

Now Prawn Cocktail and Worcester Sauce that's a different matter.
