Lost my Dad recently and my son is hoping to do a reading at the memorial service at church. Dad was an avid cricket fan and we wanted something appropriate for him to read. Roy Harpers "When an old Cricketer leaves the crease" has been mentioned. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks
Richard

There were some lovely lines in the eulogy for Phillip Hughes.

This is the particular line I was thinking of...

We must dig in and get through to tea. And we must play on.

Did John Arlot write anything suitable?

There's a comedy book, Penguins Stop Play. The final chapter of that is quite moving as the author was battling unsuccessfully against cancer to get it finished. Might be some themed words in that that could be used?

Closer, the bowler’s arm swept down,
The ball swung, swerved and darted,
Stump and bail flashed and flew;
The batsman pensively departed.

Little rattle of dry seeds in pods,
The warm crowd faintly clapped,
The boys who came to watch their gods,
The tired old men who napped,

The members sat in their strong deckchairs,
And sometimes glanced at the play,
They smoked, and talked of stocks and shares,
And the bar stayed open all day.

I guess he wrote a lot more in a similar vein

Sorry - didn't read OP properly! Do love that Roy Harper song though.
