Bank sent me a text today asking if I made a transaction.
Didn't recognise it.
Checked my cc online and found several other transactions - all to insurance companies for about 120-150 quid. And the bank tells me there were several failed transactions for similar.
Cards canceled and fraud squad are in on it. But should I be checking else where. Email passwords all changed and my Amazon and PayPal accounts changed.
Am I right in thinking they need my address to force these transactions though -cant change that but it's concerning where they got all that info from.....
Happens loads. If the bank are refunding the transactions to you, and sending a new card, that’s it really.
Keep an eye on your credit report for next few months. Plenty of free sites for this
If you've not got 2FA set up on all the accounts that support it, now's a good time to use the adrenalin from the shock to get that done.
Get a notebook and sort out one a day, stapling a printout of the backup codes to a page per account.
Day 1: main email
Day 2: PayPal
Day 3: Amazon
Day 4: Facebook
Etc
1 a day is nice and manageable and by the end of a couple of weeks you'll have a lot more peace of mind...
Oh and put the notebook somewhere safe where you won't forget, it won't be lost or damaged. And email yourself where you put it 😀
You can also have a password put on some credit checking agencies so new accounts can't be opened in your name without it.
Obvs again RECORD THAT SOMEWHERE you yourself can find it in 2 years when you take out a new credit card!
were you part of any of the big payment leaks? My card details got stolen in the BA leak - amex were very quick to block use (which I would say looked fairly typical of me), the advantage of that is nothing else was hacked (other than the BA site)
Put your email addresses in here. Then have a bit of a cry.
Am I right in thinking they need my address to force these transactions though -cant change that but it’s concerning where they got all that info from…..
Not necessarily - some services will require an address but others won't, so it will depend what the arrangement is between the vendor and the payment card processor is.
