Just had £500 taken from my account....only online purchase I have done in the past few months is CRC!!
Alternatively could i have picked something up via the web...done a full scan with kaspersky and it found nothing..
Not again....
I hope not... I've just ordered a fair amount of stuff from them... 😕
They had this a couple of years ago IIRC..
As did Wiggle?
* Awaits being told "this is why you should only shop at your LBS" comments....* 🙄
Made a purchase this morning, seems ok although I always use paypal when poss.
Do you use the same card for other purchases (non-online), like petrol or the corner shop??
I generally use Paypal when I shop online now. Its easier as I only need remember my password rather than filling in all the details and hopefully there is less chance of this type of thing happening.

No, only about 3 or 4 legit companies that i have used for business and those i have used for years and by phone...unless they have been compromised..
I use CRC occasionally for stuff i need quick, and this is the only time online..
I heard of the petrol station thing (was it esso?) and dodgy corner shops.. so i use only cash for these.
used the card in a cash point? at a restraunt and let it out your sight? there are loads of ways it could have been cloned.
Bought something when drunk and can't remember? 😉
or someone just bought your card details from your bank's overseas call centre....
£500 cash or a £500 purchase? If it's the former then they probably also have your pin number, so nowt to do with CRC
CALL YOUR BANK FFS 😉
Credit card loggers often wait a long time before using the details, makes it much harder to trace sources.
By and large- most companies have at least a couple of security weaknesses. CRC have at least one less than they used to 😉 So statistically speaking, they should be a relatively safe bet. But at the end of the day nothing is foolproof and a big part of the safety of credit cards is the customer protection from the card companies. (it's cheaper for hte industry to pay out on the existing levels of fraud than it would be to reduce it substantially)

It was a £498 purchase in Germany.... like i said i have only used CRC online.... but it could be anything i suppose just sprung to a comclusion as CRC/Wiggle have had these problems before
I had a card compromised once that had never been used for anything at all
The guy at the card company reckoned that they sometimes simply guess the numbers [there maybe some logic in it] and keep doing it until they get lucky
Not sure it's really fair to throw CRCs name in the hat with little or no evidence
It is much more likely that it was the people who you deal with by phone. You will read out your card details, including the code on the back to someone on the other end.
You trust they just punch them into their system but they could easily just write them down and then use them to buy stuff.
This happened to me when paying a parking fine to Plymouth City Council a few years ago. That's one complaint letter I relished writing!
£498 rings a bell
Partner just had her online account hacked, half a dozen amounts just below £500 ( 498 496 494 etc)so prob not CRC
Seems like Santander missed the first few

CRC have been hacked by Bikediscount.de to save you the trouble of your order turning up incorrect, lost or in an effing big box!!.
Something about transactons under £500 not causing the bank to query it imediatly IIRC? ❓

Yep, I always use the PayPal option on CRC now, and many other sites for that matter.
That way you can be assured that CRC don't get so much as a sniff of your card details, instead only having to deal with PayPal, which is an electronic Fort Knox.
+1 for using Paypal with CRC.... I was never happy with their response when it all went t1t5 up last time.

I hope it's not that simple.
20+ years ago I worked as a Saturday lad at Dixons and we had a 'floor limit' on credit cards that changed weekly. If a sale met the conditions we had to get further authorisation. It was [u]never[u] a nice round "£500".
It might have been, for example, anything above £82 but less than £240 or everything above £555.
Could be anything. Call bank asap, and download and scan PC with both Malwarebytes anti-malware and the free version of Prevx. These are very powerful anti malware tools, while Prevx has a specialism in keyloggers. Then you can rule out your PC while you get your log in and card numbers changed.
Nice thread title.
You start a thread with "CRC - Fraud" in it....
When you clearly have absolutely no idea whatsoever if it's anything to do with them 🙄
... which is presumably why the subject reads "have they been hacked?" rather than "they have been hacked", non?
I know this doesn't help you OP, but I only ever buy things online using Paypal funded by a credit card these days (2 factor authentication), and cash for everything else (fuel, groceries etc) - and only ever draw out cash from a machine within my bank (or from the bank teller if there is no queue).
I'm this paranoid after having debit cards hit over the years and having to battle tooth and nail with the bank to get my money back.
... which is presumably why the subject reads "have they been hacked?" rather than "they have been hacked", non?
Non.
The first two words suggest the Fraud is to do with CRC.
Asking if they have been hacked suggests he's not sure wether CRC themselves are responsible, or someone else, who has hacked in.
There's a good chance nothing has been hacked. It's not that difficult to randomise and guess cc numbers. The first 8 numbers on your card will be the same for you as any other customer with the same bank,no's it's only the last 8 that's being guessed at. Then then the fraudsters just need to find a suitably lax vendor, mobile phone top ups are the classic in the uk, that ask the fewest card and user details and allow the most tries.
To the best of my knowledge companies are not generally permitted to retain your cv2 number (the last 3 digits) and your bank shouldn't really be authorising payments without this so provided everyone you deal with online is playing by the rules its very possible the breach is down to malware on your computer intercepting your card details and transmitting them to fraudsters...
fortunately for the victims of such fraud its nearly impossible for banks to prove that the source of the leak wasn't them so they'll usually put you right without too much fuss...

Indeed, as I'd recently ordered something from CRC I did momentarily think 'oh sh*t' so the thread title certainly had the effect of suggesting that some fraud had or was taking place with CRC.
