Ok so those that know me know that i have a sweet tooth. I regularly eat a lot of sweets, chocolate and cake. However these have become cravings. Not just an odd chocolate bar there and there but massive binge eating. Just not i have eaten a multipack of whispers and a multipack of twirls. One after the other without stopping. Yesterday i ate a full jar of nutella with a spoon.

Its starting to concern me because i just cant stop at the moment. How can i stop? its causing me a fair bit of worry tbh. Ive not been like this before and i genuinely feel out of control. Its strange.

your teeth will fall out, but before that happens you'll have some really expensive dentist bills to pay.

It's easier not to start in the first place than it is to stop, a bit like crack I suppose.

Eat some fruit instead, drink a bit of carbonated water now and again, don't allow yourself to get bored.

I can't even remember the last time I ate a bit of chocolate or cake. I have however eaten an orange in the last 20min.

I just love the occasional tin of condensed milk. Puncture two holes in the top and suck it out through one of them.

Heaven.

Sister just bought me a pack of cocktail chocolate selection from m&s from the Marksologist collection.

Basically a pack of 16 choc liqueurs, without the liquid. 4 'flavours'

I shall list them so chocoholics can salivate.

Flavour 1 - Golden Negroni.

Milk chocolate ganache laced with star anise, orange and gin, encased in milk chocolate.

Flavour 2 -Passion Star Martini.

Tangy passion fruit & vodka ganache and a sweet chocolate filling, encased in white chocolate.

Flavour 3 -Rum,Old Fashioned.

Smooth orange and rum infused caramel, over a rich truffle filling, encased in milk chocolate.

Flavour 4 -Vanilla Espresso Martini

Rich coffee & vodka caramel, with vanilla and orange over a rich truffle, encased in dark chocolate.

Currently unopened.

I'm guessing part habit, part response to some stress maybe?

You could try mindfullness - just generic stuff to try and identify the feelings / urges rather than instantly acting on them?

I have a very sweet tooth also, and once I start can eat a lot chocolate etc, to the point that I'm not even enjoying it but will be compelled to keep eating. The only way I've found to stop the cravings is to abstain from sweet foods entirely and go cold turkey. It will be very hard at first but once you gone a few days, you'll not miss the sweet foods. But be warned that you can easily be lured back in.

Sugar is my only addiction.

Im fairly sure its stress related. weve has mass redundancies, Job worry, flood, coma, car issues and burglary all in the last month. Not to say about all the financial stress its causing.

Thing is i dont want to eat anything. Im not hungry (has a few apples today). But i drove to get the chocolate. Its not even like its easy access!

Get hypnotized into thinking the bar of chocolate you are about to put in your mouth is a dog turd

If it works that will stop the craving

I have irrational sweet cravings even when I feel stuffed, just like many others typically Sept-Apr, due to Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I told my wife I could give up processed sugar. WRONG!

It worked for a few days, but was then intolerable. I would need a much bigger reason to do it than proving I can for no real reason.

I do all the things you have listed. I'm not enormously worried. It comes and goes I probably should stop it. Life became very difficult with no processed sugar.

Also you don't want to end up with type 2 diabetes.

Don't have anything in the house. Buy only really good chocolate and have a couple of squares a night.
Clean your teeth early on in the evening, this will help also drink more water (this fills you up).
I have really bad teeth with dentist bills to make your eyes water.

It's hard, but at least you know you have a problem. Ask a friend to keep an eye on your sugar intake.

Hows your sleep? Being tired makes it very easy to be susceptible to a quick sugar hit

Another slave to Mr Kipling here. Also eat sweet stuff (and crisps) as some kind of stress relief. I need to find a better outlet for stress. Shall we form a sugar addicts support group?

I crave sugar especially in the evenings, I just make myself a cup of tea, or have a glass of water. Dull but does work.

I too have cravings, lunchtime and evening, and I do submit to them. I went cold turkey for a month in Jan except 1 thing with each weekly shop, but fell back into it.

You can get blood tests from companies like Thriva, I think HbA1C is the relevant one, maybe that would give you a needed scare.

Bad. For some reason I can't be arsed going to bed until silly o clock.

And I thought I had problems if I ate 2 digestives instead of 1 😔

A lot of it is habit I reckon, most bike rides involve a cafe stop , I'm trying to just ask for coffee and not being distracted by all the cakes 🙄

Doc has just put me on Statins , he doesn't like my cholesterol at 5.9% even though it's been that level for donkeys years. All my mates have been put on them , we are all late 60s so I guess that's a factor?

You haven't got a "sweet tooth"... that's just an excuse. You have developed really poor eating habits, probably through being surrounded by temptation at every turn. The manufacturers and retailers that provide these temptations do not care about you: they just want to your money. They do not care that you will develop type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc... they just want your money. Beat those evil f**ckers by not buying their product. Buy non-processed only. In 3 months you will hate the taste of sugar. You will also be more healthy, have more energy and more money 🙂

Look into a diet which focuses on avoiding food and drink that provokes an insulin response. That's very much like a GI based diet.

If you get an insulin spike, it can lead to a blood sugar crash, which in turn leads to a craving for sweet and fatty food that willpower alone cannot resist. This may be a hormone response that's programmed into us from our hunter gathering past.

Many years ago on this forum there was much discussion and argument about the "iDiet" with war being declared by it's proponents and the "eat less move more" adherents.

User name checks out blah blah. 😎

I regularly eat a lot of sweets, chocolate and cake

These two things are linked.

Over the past 10 years of trying to break my 'sugar addiction' I realised I was eating lot's of sugary stuff and staying up very late - despite being absolutley knackered and in dire need of a good nights rest.

Both are stress responses - at least they are/were for me.

I'm still doing battle with the underlying issue but recognising the symptoms for what they are/were has helped me to deal with things.

i hear ya! i'm exactly the same. Just love chocolate, biscuits and cake. I've got better but have been known to eat a whole bar of huge dairy milk or galazy bar

A couple of years ago i managed to go cold turkey from all of it. Once i got past 20 days it was much much easier. I keep telling myself i'll do the same again as noticing more belly fat and tight jeans.

I did successfully give up alchohol. Haven't drunk since last november. Not that i was drinking loads I just wanted to break the cycle of having a drink to de stress, have a good time etc

Same here (for ref I'm 5'9"). During the first lockdown I went from 13/5 to 11/11 and felt so much better. Since then I've been working from home and gone up to 15/9, the heaviest I've ever been by quite a margin. I'm binging a lot, not even taking my time to enjoy it. I don't seem to have the will power to stop.

I'm pretty bad for it, especially when stressed. Definitely best to quit completely for a while. I like to count the days, it soon adds up and you stop bothering after a while at which point when i get a craving, I tell myself to hold out for today and when tomorrow comes the craving has usually gone. My worst used to be high-sugar fizzy drinks, but now I can't imagine myself going back to them at all, it's a ridiculous habit when you get on the other side and realise how you've been consuming so many unnecessary calories, damaging your health and wasting money. I feel significantly better now, I'm fitter and lighter than I have been for years.

When out on the bike I try to use sugar that isn't too tasty to avoid overdoing it there and slipping back into my old ways.

Are you drinking lots? Regular drinks I mean, not alcohol.

If the answer is "yes," get yourself to a GP pronto.

My sugar cravings stopped after I sat on the sofa one Sunday afternoon and ate 2x 130g  bags of jelly snakes. The sugar rush gave me the most awful headache and I've not been able to eat sweets since.

Stopping putting  sugar in my tea or coffee and not drinking any sweetened drinks between meals also had a profound impact on my tolerance for sweet foods.
