I can only assume that when you are "under the weather" your mind decides that the body is lacking and encourages you to consume more calories. Salad is seldom a comfort food to me even though I eat fields of it under normal circumstances. There is also the psychological approach that comfort food makes you happy.
I'm partial to midget gems when I'm full of cold, I don't have an explanation for the reason.
