Over the last few years I've periodically had cramp in my right leg while sleeping. I can normally feel it coming on and give my leg a wiggle, but last night it got me a proper good one.
Can't think of any reason why I should be getting it as I drink plenty, walk plenty and don't sit down all day.
Anyone else get them?
Launching out of bed in the middle of the night screaming doesn't go down well with my menopausal Mrs! 🤣
Yes get it in my calf quite a bit - savage if it takes hold like you say, feel it for the rest of the day.
If it's the calves you can completely head it off just by lengthening the muscle - pointing your foot up. It's quite strange. But it's not always possible to do this coming out of sleep.
Hydration usually, medication ? Not had any cramps for a long time and really can't say what causes it sometimes, but I do tend to get a period of getting them. Religiously taking magnesium, vit d and turmeric every morning these days (post broken pelvis).
Hydration sorted so do stretches before bed helps mine. Cheaper than pill popping which I avoid with the exception of vitamin d in the winter
I get that in my calves & down the front of the shins; nasty. I've stuck a banana on my shredded wheat each morning & that seems to help (possibly phycological though).
It might be worth having a blood test at the GP just to check your potassium though.
A mate I used to run with swore by salt tablets to prevent cramping
Thanks folks - weirdly I ordered some magnesium yesterday as someone at the bowls club was going on about how great it is!
Don't want to drink more water before bed or I'll only add to my nightly toilet visits! 🚽
Not had one for a while, but occasionally get one on the arch of my foot... only seems to happen when I'm in bed - hurts like a bugger!
I never thought I was short of Vit D. Busted my pelvis, so paid for a test. 17 nmol, when normal is 50-200, so you need to be nearer 100. I'm out in the sun all year round, but I'm not exposing much more than legs/arms and face. My wife recommended Magnesium for general pain, and so many people recommended it to aid healing after my fracture. I chucked in turmeric for inflammation reduction. It's not expensive.
Magnesium relieves cramps, helps with nerve and muscle function, and helps with vitamin D absorption
There's a few different compounds (is that the word) with magnesium - they help different things. I think Glycinate is the one for muscles, but don't take medical advice from a random off the internet 😉
I have the SIS hydration tablets if I've been working out - that helps my cramps.
Normally in my calf (tends to be the right leg) but occasionally the front of my thigh above the knee - that is excruciating and does cause clenching of the teeth 😩.
I'll give the magnesium a go!
Magnesium
Ive been really bothered by this recently. It hasn’t typically been an issue for me historically. But it was becoming an almost night,y thing.
I bought some soluble rehydration tablets in Decathalon. I take one after biking now, and that seems to have solved the issue.

Maybe you need to dial down the exercise intensity.....maybe reduce the number of ends per session? 😉
…1hr 35mins one game went on for the other week - brutal!!! 🤣
Not to be too alarming, but there’s a possibility that you may have type-2 diabetes.
Swing by your gp?
I'm at the docs quite often and regularly have blood tests for high blood pressure tablets I'm on (every six months). Got one of them blood-sugar testers myself too and all is fine on that score. 😀
👍
Mrs zips family put bars of soap in the bed to prevent cramp.
Amazingly it doesn't work.
Amputation.
It's the only way to be sure.
