Just noticed half hour ago WRC driver Craig Breen killed in rally shakedown, his navigator not hurt in the accident
That's sad - he was a rare sportsman in that you got the impression he was overwhelmingly excited about doing what he loved, and knew he was lucky to be there.
you got the impression he was overwhelmingly excited about doing what he loved
Definitely - you could see how pleased he was to have a competitive car in Rally Sweden this year. A pleasure to watch.
When we see drivers leaping out of cars following multiple barrel rolls it's easy to forget how dangerous the sport still is.
RIP Craig
A real shock. I guess we all think that fatal crashes in WRC are consigned to the history of Group B.
Craig was such a passionate driver and would often be in tears of delight when interviewed after a good stage or event performance.
So young.
RIP fella.
Big surprise and gutted. He was one of the good guys. Must have been a freak or massive one.
Seen a photo (from quite far away, nothing grim) looks like a freak one like Phil Mills’ accident. Either way, just not something you expect to hear these days. Pretty gutting
That's a great video, and a great tribute.
Rallying although safer - is still a high-risk sport. Rest in peace, Craig.
Phil Mills is v much alive.
Apologies, meant Michael Park
Awful, dreadful news. He was a passionate rally fan, who knew everything about the sport - and had the talent to make a career out of it. And would often be out on national/clubman events driving historic cars.
Sadly, he himself knew tragedy, crashing on an ERC event in 2012 which claimed the life of his co-driver, 'Jaffa' Roberts, who he would often mention in interviews.
Shame.
