I've been looking at a car on eBay that's at the other end of the country. It's a non runner, no tax or MOT etc. So, if I want it I'd have to bring it home on a trailer. However, I've not actually got anywhere to put said car... so my cunning brain is thinking - how long could the car live on the trailer out on the street? Would it always have to be connected to the tow-car?
I'm not really considering this as I'd have to work on it to get it roadworthy in the street. Or, on the trailer... 🙂
But it just got me thinking? What are the rules?
A quick google search says that the trailer must be attached to a taxed vehicle.
To be fair round here an unmanned trailer would be removed pdq.
You won't see the trailer again. Scrap car will be dumped at the side of the road near by
A chap in the next street to me seems to have a line in doing up written off cars. He used to keep one of them on the street on the back of the flatbed which he used to the collect the cars.
I assume it was ok as the flatbed was taxed/insured and the car was classed as cargo. Not sure where you stand on a trailer, I assume it's still cargo.
Edit
As above, only ok if the trailer is attached to a road legal (taxed) vehicle
The transit here has been on that trailer for about a decade (no exaggeration.. look through the street view history). It has no engine.

TheTransit changed colour!
And grew a high top!
Even more surprising is that it's attached to a Maestro, in 2012! Clearly looks like they're finding the cheapest road legal car they can get their hands on and attaching the trailer for storage.
Its not actually attached to anything. They just back a car up to it occasionally (I never saw it hooked on)..
Be aware that many councils have bye laws that ban motor repairs in the street no bug deal but aimed at those running a business and being a nuisance to neighbours so if got problematic neighbours this might impact
Edit wtf autocorrected big to bug

I’ve not seen a Maestro for years! My mate used to have one which was awesome, like a GTI version or something. Think it ended up wrapped round a tree.
These 2 have been there a while, but only because there's no space left on the grass.

MG Maestro turbo.
Was a Cosworth eater. 150mph beast of a thing. Super rare cause they melted in the rain.

Torque steered itself there, no doubt. 😀

You in Gossie by any chance? Wonder if you're actually next to me as well, that sounds suspicously similar....
Michael Knight never paid tax. Just get a huge lorry and park it in there.
Once the car is legally back on the road, bonus points for exiting in reverse whilst the lorry is being driven down the dual carriageway.

Nope, Whitley (South Reading). I'm assuming every old council estate has one.
