Why do people do it? Do they have a build up of hand tension that needs to be released? Or have they been watching too many movies?

mine feel quite uncomfortable sometimes, say after a while typing [s]on STW [/s]important business notes, and cracking them does indeed make them feel a lot more relaxed/less tense.

Yes, relieves tension - anything that does that is good 😉

Mine tend to seize and hurt, cracking them especially after a ride does really release the pressure/tension.

I'm sure its not good as i used to crack my neck but after going to a chiropractor i stopped and now i never need too.
I assume this is because it's healed.

I know i shouldn't do it but it feels so good.

I can crack my left thumb without touching it. It really impressed the girls when I was young.

Seems to relieve tension in my knuckles somehow. Problem is that the more I do it the more it needs it. The more it needs it the more it hurts when it's cold weather etc. Stopped doing it for about 6 months and my fingers felt 5x better.

Is it not just air in the tendons as opposed to air trapped in the joint that is released so entirely harmless, but satisfying.

I've had numerous medical professionals present different answers to this. The most reasonable (to me) answer was that it's simply forcing ligaments and tendons over and through the joints in ways not normally done. Why would there be air/gas trapped in your joints? Do you get little pockets of air floating around in your body normally? Not that I'm aware of, in fact they're usually a bad sign (pneumothorax anyone)! CAvitation woud require pretty massive pressure differentials that I'd question the possibility of.

Clicking of tendons over joints fits more accurately with my experience, do it often enough and they become inflamed and sore and your fingers tend to become fairly loose and liable to dislocation.
