was going to go and look at, and hopefully collect, a motorcycle over the weekend which is a great deal but it has occurred to me that im in tier 3 and would be undertaking a 3 hr drive into a tier 2 area.

i would be leaving my house going directly to the bike shop, turning round and coming home, not stopping anywhere else.

the alternative is to buy unseen and have it delivered. photos look great but it doesnt match seeing it in the flesh. plus we are likely to be in tier 3 for a long time.

any thoughts? travel or not?

Just get it done. I've got someone coming to collect a bike tomorrow from London. I neither know nor care what tier they or I am supposed to be in this week.

Aye, and thats one of the types of behaviour that'll see us into a quarter 1 long lockdown.

Easy .... you say it’s a shop that will deliver right.....
You know you shouldn’t travel to tier 2 from tier 3
So........
Call the shop, explain you want to abide to rule 1 and ask them to bring you the bike to view with intention of buying it if all is well.

If they agree it’s fine .... if not I’m not sure I would be wanting to buy from them anyway... not great customer service ,and that’s before anything goes wrong......

Erm, you want a shop to travel 3 hours to show someone a bike they may or may not buy?

If it's gonna be your mode of utility transport I think you could.

If it's for leisure use, follow your conscience.

Agree with the above - non-essential unless you need the bike for work, etc.

Will you be riding the bike much until spring anyway?

I'm in the market for a new bike but waiting for showrooms to open so I test ride some bikes. Now is not the time to buy unless you really need to.

Gonna respectfully disagree with this. Phone them in advance, ask them to bring it outside the shop to look at. Absolutely minimal risk compared to the stuff that IS likely to see us into a Q1 long lockdown, like family Christmas, school, restaurants in tier 2, people going from tier 3 to restaurants in t2, house parties business meetings in pubs etc.

Actually, he said "one of the things", so maybe he is right.

I reckon you should ask on Snowheads, they'll be fine with it 😄

its not for work, i have another for that. this is purely for fun (trials bike). i could wait until spring but its hard to find a good used one at the right price, just like MTB's they sell before they are even listed. i nabbed this one before it was even part exchanged!
anyway, ive followed the covid rules all year, and as much as i would have loved the opportunity to visit a new bike shop im going to get it delivered and for the first time ever buy 'unseen', although ive scrutinised the pictures.
for those who are interested...

I can’t see how there is more risk by you going and picking it up vs someone delivering it too you, especially if you avoid any contact with anyone else on the way there and back, and view outside.

yep i agree, but im not sure the police will if they were to stop me. 'advice' seems to be dont leave tier 3. the fine is £200 for a first offence apparently if you cant prove your journey is essential. having said that Youtube is full of people driving allover the uk, in and out of wales etc to ride bikes so im not sure how many people are actually following rules or if they are being policed at all. delivery is half that and not much more than a round trip in diesel so i may as well spend my weekend riding.

Good move OP, I think you're doing the right thing even if others aren't.

It looks like a cracking bike - enjoy 🙂 I'm envious!

I live in England and work at a site in North Wales as do lots of my colleagues. No one has ever been stopped and asked about their travel at any point in the restrictions. Sounds like you are sorted but I'd go and get it with your sensible precautions suggested.

I could break the mechanics down of going biking or hill walking all over scotland, and that would be minimal risk too, but it'd be really selfish.

I've been looking at new alloys for my van, but they've all been in edinburgh or Glasgow, so will have to wait. I don't actually need them

It's a leisure purchase, you're doing the right thing OP.

Obey the rule.

Well, yes. They can anyway if he pays the delivery charge, so why not offer to pay the delivery charge, unless the bike turns out to be not as advertised / a piece of shit? If he likes it, they leave it with him. It’d give an indication to the shops confidence in its condition as well.

Just been to my local village and it’s rammed with people as are the roads, I can’t imagine everyone’s journeys are essential. I waited patiently for a parking space while others stopped in the disabled spot or just parked on double yellows. Does make me question why I bother to follow rules when it feels like plenty of other don’t.

Ah. Had assumed it was for transport. In that case I agree with pretty much everyone else.

No
