I know we've done them before, but put this on a big sound system and tell me it doesn't make the hairs stand up....

I thought Lorde did an amazing job of covering Life On Mars at the Brits for the Bowie tribute. Must have been a big pressure job

The Disturbed version of SoS is better when it's played loud; I was on a late shift this week, and the bloke running the machine I was helping on is a metal head, and he stuck his phone on the little stereo by the machine and cranked it up, it didn't sound too bad, the singer at least has a powerful voice and is in tune, with no electronic help.
I have heard worse covers, Madge's version of American Pie, for example; should have seen her put in the stocks for people to laugh and throw garbage at her!
Turn this up to eleven:

From the same OST, I was rather surprised to find it was Emiliana Torini singing this, having seen her live, and having one of her albums, she's a lot... louder on this cover!

Damn, left it to late to do an edit, I left the video off!
This is what I should have posted:

Just in from the gig but they didn't play it.

Love this:

People think Thunder Road's a positive song but Springsteen always meant it to be obvious that it's going to end badly. Frank's version nails that I think, reeks of desperation.

Billy the Kid's good- she basically knocks out stacks of covers on piano and guitar, pretty hit and miss but some are absolute gems. Her version of Martha, ah man.

Ah now that's the one I was specifically referring to. No that certainly doesn't make the hairs stand up. It's dross.

Gah! It only made the hairs of my arse smooth down as a giant loathsome eel of disapprobation involuntarily slid out onto my ipad. Seriously, you and some others need to work on that earwax! 😯

Meanwhile, the following cover version cleaned out my ears and made them all nice again. Only thing that spoiled it was the stuffed suits politely bobbimg in their chairs, but you can't have it all.

Evidence of awesome - Jimmy Page's face at 6:17 😀

* edit - pigface that was weird, I just saw your post after I posted. More synchrotastic evidence of the awesome.

Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" is my personal discovery of the year so far. It was his last recording before he died in 2003.

LOL at COB 😆 Have some Taylor . . . I Prevail nailed it . . .

Loved the Disturbed cover when I first heard it but it's been played to death on the Georgia station I listen to.

Didn't want to be too obvious 😉
Was at the Barrowlands gig. Awesome!
Stayed in the MacDonald after, times changed since the early 90s!

Always liked this, but I think Heart trumps it.

Okay, looks like I don't know how to link to youtube, but its Guns N Roses. Knockin' on Heaven's door.

Best cover version in the world is "song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil.

Bit of a cliche maybe, but Eva Cassidy. She turns songs I hate into things I love. How she subtly re-interprets the melody and phrasing is beautiful.

Not only is this a brilliant cover, it's one of my favourite tracks played by Frank and it's not even his.

What a band though.

At the risk of self-immolation, the cover of Hope There's Someone on The Voice tonight was fantastic, better than the original.

Only just heard this one on the free cd with this month's Uncut magazine, took me a while to realise who did the original...

And I'm not going to give a clue, but the singer is Charles Bradley
Difficult to argue with metalhead's post, I've got four versions of that song, the original Fred Neil, Eddi Reader, Tim Buckley and Billy Bragg; Eddi's version was the first I ever heard, when she sang it at the Fleece & Firkin in Bristol many years ago, and I'm torn between hers and Tim's, but I think his just edges it.

Another cover of a Tim Hardin song. It's Bobby Darin, shortly before his death. He used his light entertainment show to promote a love for music, chess and left wing politics.

Social Distortion version of Under My Thumb is a vast improvement on the original which is just about ok.

I've always admired Layne Staley's voice and I think this cover does no disrespect to it whatsoever. Brilliant.
