Link to a song where you think the cover version surpassed the original.

Here's mine to start:

Original was by ZZ Top.

Valerie, Amy W / Mark Ronson.
It is a pity that she was so drunk/drugged that she didnt turn up for the video.

Oooh, controversial Notmyrealname, I preferred Reznors original. I'll add to it however with

Sisters of Mercy's version of Gimme Shelter

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Probably the best cover ever.

+1, even Trent Reznor prefers it, so Phil's wrong 😉

I'll stay away from the Hurt discussion, I love them both for being different, (Romaneks video made the cash cover especially poignant of course, without that I don't think it would have taken off like it did. Cash's other covers on the same album, eg. 'one' and 'personal jesus' are also genius!)

but, the fathers of industrial brought us this 😯

Imagine Duffy was putting up a fence and really struggling. Then these guys pop by in their van and do a professional job for her.

Would say - possibly - Song to the Siren / Cocteau Twins but that's debatable / arguable.

Walk on By - The Stranglers though original is pretty good too.

Check out his album 'Rock Swings' for a number of other covers that are either demented genius or criminal offences, depending on your pov.

Mogrim that Nina Gordan one is one my favorites as well....sounds awesome but also makes me chortle.

This is probably going to be contentious one but I prefer this over the original Smiths version....sorry in advance to any Smiths fans:

It's a pathetic travesty of a brilliant original.

Clearly the answer to this is all along the watchtower by Hendrix.

Genius cover, even Dylan preferred it and hates his songs been covered allegedly. That Ben Folds cover is brilliant 🙂

Tim Armstrong was involved in the last one, but it still counts.

Sisters of Mercy's version of Gimme Shelter

Blasphemy!

Haha! You'll not like this one then either. Local Sheffield band Whitewash [s]murdering[/s]covering Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights (ties in with the Hounds of Love mentioned earlier) starts at 27:45

How about this for a cheesefest, better than the Commodores/Lionel Ritchie version IMO.

If no one has posted this, then I'm surprised (I can't be bothered waiting for all the YouTube vids to load).

The original ain't bad, but the Clash revved it up somewhat.

No, the original is better IMO.

Actually, I think I prefer the original.

Now this is better than the original, probably the poorest Nivana Nevermind track brought to life
