Ordered thing off eBay. Gets delivered in Amazon packaging (presumably from Amazon via drop shipper).
Package arrives except rather than normal knock on door, wait for door to open, hand over package, the courier appears to have walked in a left the package in hall.

My wife was in the kitchen at the time. Before she had a chance the wash hands and get to door (10 seconds) the package had appeared in hallway. The only thing that could have happened is the courier has opened the door, walked in and left the package and then closed the door. We don't always lock the door during the day, but it would definitely be closed. My wife saw the courier get back into his van, but didn't feel comfortable speaking to him.

So there's a courier who thinks it's ok to just walk into people's houses. It doesn't take much imagination to think would could happen if the courier was a sinster type.

Not sure how to deal with this. Any thoughts?

We had one a couple of weeks ago.
Ordered from ebay and delivered by Amazon.
Guy knocked on the side door whilst we were in the garden.
Met him at the back gate to take the package however he wouldn't leave it till he had placed it in the house and took a photo of it.
Said it was Amazon policy. Don't usually use Amazon so not sure if it was true or not.

With the amount of packages getting lifted/stolen etc couriers are constantly getting arse kicked !!

Happens all the time here. Shetland.
Many people rarely lock their doors, many don't even 'key the car'.

Drives me mad but you can even see cars (expensive new ones) left unattended and running outside shops. I'm often tempted to turn them off or move them somewhere else!

Happens here. Generally don't walk in.

They crack the door and leave it in the porch.

Better than them leaving it on the door step as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely zero possibility that the door was left open rather than just unlocked? Ours would never be left like that but twice in 10 yrs I’ve discovered it sitting wide open hours after anyone went through it - simply because it hadn’t been shut quite right? I could imagine a courier knocking on the door or leaning a package against it and it swinging open. Not sure he should just walk in, but if you can leave the package and pull door over without entering yourself then why not.

I've had a few deliveries where I've answered the door and they then want a picture of it in the doorway. I guess leaving it on a doorstep isn't proof of delivery but an open door is

Shouldn’t you be more worried about criminals who might walk freely into your house than some bloke doing what seems quite a stressful gig economy job?

Don't really see the problem. If you don't want deliveries inside the door lock it. I'd call it good service.

When our new TV was delivered I met them outside, and offered to take it in myself thinking that as they are usually in such a hurry it would be doing them a favour. No, they wanted to drop it inside the front door themselves, with a photo otherwise they would be in breach of contract with the seller they said. Perhaps some companies are more strict on their requirements.
Richer sounds btw.
Could understand their logic tbf

Totally agree. He seems to have taken the odd viewpoint that the logical next step from "courier delivering parcel and taking picture of it delivered through door" is "courier morphs into psycho weirdo killer"
Strange reasoning.

doesn’t take much imagination to think would could happen if the courier was a sinster type.

None of which has anything to do with the original Amazon courier, and everything to do with you locking your front door.

So you had a parcel sucessfully delivered and, er, thats it.
Nightmare!

If you don’t want deliveries inside the door lock it.

Safest idea would be to go to the shops rather than purchase stuff off the internet

As said most now have to take a picture inside the door which has improved the service of Herpes round here a hundredfold.

If you're concerned about folk just walking in then lock your door as suggested. It what it's there for.

Iain the DPD guy and the postie both do this when they can see through the window that I’m working. Easier for both of us. I often hear Iain in the hallway making a fuss of my dog. One day I fully expect him to make himself a coffee as well!

I'd start locking your door. Our neighbours never bothered locking theirs while they were in. They went out one day and both their cars were gone. Someone had walked in through the unlocked door, picked up both sets of cars keys and just driven both of them off, never to be seen again.

And this is hardly some inner city hell-hole with hordes of marauding scallies. Just a gang trying their luck. A few went missing in surrounding streets too in the same fashion. This was on a Sunday morning while they were all in the house

Well, that's hardly the only thing that could have happened, is it? My theory is the courier was desperately in need of a massive shit so he let himself into your house and availed himself of your facilities. Then he put the parcel in the hall and knocked the door on the way out.

At least he didn't blind you with his laser beam.

So there’s a courier who thinks it’s ok to just walk into people’s houses. It doesn’t take much imagination to think would could happen if the courier was a sinster type.

It's a bit of a leap.

By your own evidence they weren't the sinister type.

So really it boils down to "what if anyone was the sinister type"?

What's stopping you walking into people's houses and getting upto no good?

Beats the couriers who record the package as “handed to resident” then just stuff it down the side of your house in full view of people walking past

What a weird post, seems ok to leave a door unlocked so any actual "sinister" person could just walk in but not ok for a delivery driver to drop off a parcel as they could be a "sinister" person, might need to have a word with yourself there I think.

Delivery staff taking photos of parcels on doorstep with an open door is becoming hip and trendy, apparently Royal Mail are now doing this for specific company packages.

**** me. You have to make a pretty big jump from courier doing something useful to there being some sinister overtones.

I think if anyone is going to wander into your house uninvited they should at least make their presence known, though if you live in the Yorkshire Dales read Bill Bryson for the usual approach.

The same Courier then walks into a bar and the bartender says....

"Sorry, we don't serve your type in here."

Courier knocks to announce presence, leaves package somewhere safe and then leaves. All within 10secs.
Pretty good I'd say.

Can you get an insurance payout if a car is stolen with the keys that are taken from an unlocked house? My understanding is that home insurance is void if you don't lock the door.

I had this once. Delivery guy (or at least a guy dressed as a delivery driver) walked straight in without knocking. I confronted him in the hall, he said "sorry, wrong house", and promptly left. Guessed he was a chancer looking for an empty house to rob.

I've kept the front door locked at all times ever since.

A mate of mine fell asleep (drunk) one evening and someone walked into his house and stole his socks.

He suspected it was just a mate messing around but never did find out. And never got his socks back, either.

So be careful out there folks.

I'm with the op on this. But also was under the impression that most front doors latch when pushed to. For the odd occasion we need need to keep the front door unlocked I certainly wouldn't want one that stayed openable from the outside without some sort of key.

My father used to get his prescriptions delivered to his house from the local chemist. Of course being as deaf as a post he never heard the guy at the door and understandably the courier wouldn't leave them on the doorstep. I kept asking them to just open the door and leave the stuff on the mat but they wouldn't do it. Not the end of the world but a bit of a pain.

I used to be a ‘not living in fear not locking the door’ type but came to the sensible conclusion that I’ll just lock the door behind me. That way I won’t be left wondering ‘if only’.

Our local Hermes lady is part of the community now, she's a very forthright lady and would do this if you left the door unlocked.

She has a tendency to pinch the best plums off the tree and once came in the back garden to ask if we had any school trousers her son could have.

Could be worse, someone left a horse tied up in our garden when I was a nipper.

Did you ever find out who? One of the neigh-bours must have been the mane suspect. Odd thing to leave you saddled with though, you must have bridled at that!

That’s all I read in to it. I’d love it if they popped in here. Beats leaving things outside or having to rush downstairs because most folk knock then bugger off within two seconds if you’ve not answered.

Is that not how it works? You buy stuff, they bring it you and drop it off in the house.
Most of our deliverers do this, but the Hermes lady won’t cross the drawbridge.

Was expecting a punchline after that thread title OP.

"A courier walks into a house, the occupant doesn't say anything." isn't that funny though, I suppose.

Hope you're gonna start locking your front door now anyway.

Sheesh.

Round here the local FB page is awash with reports of couriers not delivering stuff, I guess if they can prove it arrived in the house it saves a lot of grief.

Our postman once left a parcel "in the shed with the guinea pig" according to the note through the door. To do that he unbolted the side gate and presumably checked which of the sheds was unlocked, which shows commitment, I'll grant you.

Apparently some pizza deliverers have found a way to take a central inch-wide slice out of large pizzas to give themselves a free meal without it being noticed. I'm sure they nip in some customers houses and give it a quick heat up in the microwave too 😀

Right, I stand corrected. Will inform wife to remember to check the door is locked! Especially as I now remember during first lockdown police warned us that local baddies were walking into people's houses, even when people were in.

P.S. I don't get the font jokes??

Always very happy if couriers put things in the door instead of leaving them outside tbh.

I mean, you're worried about "if the courier was a sinster type" but you don't seem to be at all worried about everyone else in the world that can just walk in through your unlocked door? I'm not worried about that either which is why my door's unlocked and also why I'm not worried about couriers doing it. But if I was worried I'd bloody lock it.

At least they shut the door. I have had a few couriers who just leave the gate wide open and that can mean cows or horses coming in to see what they can eat in the garden. My neighbour had a garden full of cows just last week after her gate was left open.

Locking the gate makes deliveries a bit difficult though doesn't it...

To all those defending the courier / berating the OP, I say this:

The courier has no idea what's behind the door. OP and PartnerOfOP could be doing rude things on the couch. And yes, they should've locked the door first but sometimes the heat of the moment and something something, and elsewhere on STW people are arguing that you shouldn't have to lock yourself into your own home in the first place. But however you slice it, it's an invasion of privacy.

For my part I almost always lock the front door even when at home, not least because I'm usually working (or spodding on STW) upstairs. I've had this happen where a delivery-person has torn open the front door and wanged a parcel through it. Yay, great, successfully delivered parcel. However. As above, I have cats, two are kittens who have never known "outside" and the other is getting on a bit and has the road sense of a KFC Bargain Bucket. If any were to get out I'd likely need a spatula.

I’d be more concerned if it was Times New Roman.

My last one was delivered by a drone. As proof of delivery they took an Arial photograph.

seems ok to leave a door unlocked so any actual “sinister” person could just walk in

As a left-hander, I'm offended by this.

I’m with the op on this. But also was under the impression that most front doors latch when pushed to.

Most? No. The Yale-style latches on wooden doors do (and are shit, replace them), and older uPVC locks also. The vast majority IME do not.

Happens fairly often to us (NE Scotland) and I’ve always thought it was just good service. There is a pretty small group of drivers that deliver out here and I guess I’ve got to know them all.

We’ve got a friend from Shetland who never locks his (remote) house even when he’s away. When asked why not he just says “what if someone wanted to get in?”

Obviously depends where they've stolen it from but it could be as much as 60-odd miles.

Yes, I was curious and had a look on Google Maps. And yes, I've more useful things I should be doing but I'm procrastinating as hard as I can. Which is pretty damn hard.
