Turkey.
Holy shitballs.
Ooft.
To be fair, if I had to listen to Erdogan's squeaky voice all the time, I'd have done the same.
Isn't Turkey joining the EU next week? Maybe [s]we[/s] they should re-think that.

Shouldn't it be a chicken coop ?
Isn't Turkey joining the EU next week?
Turxin?
What in the wide, wide world of sport is going on with the world?
Good job we have a seasoned and measured foreign secretary, oh eck wait a minute.
Co-op Turkey?
Looks like BoJo is going to have to organise a conciliatory game of rugger, to sort this one.
Nato to the rescue, err who's side though 😕
Boris could pen a nice calming poem.
Boris couldn't go near turkey with that blond mop, he'd get shagged senseless from da yoot. Hopefully.
The importance of having a well disciplined pet bear.....
Bojos only been in the job a day. What's that buffoon gone and done ?
Nato to the rescue, err who's side though
Oddly, the military are the "moderates", I believe. Erdogan isn't.
Dagnamit - beaten at the post by flash while I got the F16 video
Crazy video though, d'you think it meant to go that low? [s]You should repost it in here. :)[/s] EDIT Glad you posted it in here. 🙂

a chicken coop ?
Chickens working together for the common good?
(Tbh, trying to rescue you from the embarrassment at such an obvious joke.)
Official statement from the Turkish Armed Forces says it has taken over the government.
Apparently they have the airport, the border between turk and asia and the state broadcaster.
Coup, a fine scots word = Rubbish dump
"This bedrooms like a coup"
Oooh!, a mate flew out to Ankara earlier this week - I'll try and get in touch with him to see whats happening.
Good luck, seemingly the internet has been cut as well.
Nice to see people can make light of what could be another night of violence and bloodshed. Stay classy.
Can I use the word 'junta' yet?. I like that word.
Jumping the gun a bit there SK. Let's hope you are anyway.
Nice to see people can make light of what could be another night of violence and bloodshed.
No evidence of that yet, but it could be quite an important event. Historic perhaps. It is Fascinating, lets hope it's bloodless.
It does look like Boris backed the right pony though 🙂
Does it?
OMFG 😯 😯
If Edrogen is gone then thats a good result in itself. However a military coup even with the Prime Minister's assistance isn't exactly the ideal outcome.
Turkey is a NATO member FFS.
On a side note our friends on holiday in Turkey have said occupancy is 20-50% versus expected near 100% at this time of year. This was mainly around terrorism concerns but a military coup isn't going to help.
We shall have to see how the US and EU responds. Major major development

Doesn't US have a military base or two in Turkey?
And Syria with Russia next door?
Traditionally in Turkey, the military have positioned themselves as the custodians of secular democracy. Previous coups have been in response to governments lurching away from the more moderate path. I hope this follows that tradition.
Apparently after the 1980 coup :
650,000 people were under arrest.
1,683,000 people were blacklisted.
230,000 people were tried in 210,000 lawsuits.
7,000 people were recommended for the death penalty.
517 persons were sentenced to death.
50 of those given the death penalty were executed (26 political prisoners, 23 criminal offenders and 1 ASALA militant).
The files of 259 people, which had been recommended for the death penalty, were sent to the National Assembly.
71,000 people were tried by articles 141, 142 and 163 of Turkish Penal Code.
98,404 people were tried on charges of being members of a leftist, a rightist, a nationalist, a conservative, etc. organization.
388,000 people were denied a passport.
30,000 people were dismissed from their firms because they were suspects.
14,000 people had their citizenship revoked.
30,000 people went abroad as political refugees.
300 people died in a suspicious manner.
171 people died by reason of torture.
937 films were banned because they were found objectionable.
23,677 associations had their activities stopped.
3,854 teachers, 120 lecturers and 47 judges were dismissed.
400 journalists were recommended a total of 4,000 years imprisonment.
Journalists were sentenced 3,315 years and 6 months imprisonment.
31 journalists went to jail.
300 journalists were attacked.
3 journalists were shot dead.
300 days in which newspapers were not published.
303 cases were opened for 13 major newspapers.
39 tonnes of newspapers and magazines were destroyed.
299 people lost their lives in prison.
144 people died in a suspicious manner in prison.
14 people died in hunger strikes in prison.
16 people were shot while fleeing.
95 people were killed in combat.
"Natural death report" for 73 persons was given.
The cause of death of 43 people was announced as "suicide".
This was our Foreign Secretary's great-grandfather
🙂
OK Ernie, I stand corrected
1980 is a long time ago.

Very hard to determine, recent figures. Secrecy and all that
Was 50 million a year in 2011 and 2010
They are considered a 'Priority Customer' by our government and I can only imagine what we've sold them since the war on ISIS really got going
Erdogan is very popular at home.
He pleases the working class with his religious conservatism and the middle class take it begrudgingly because the economy is doing well and income for rich and poor has dramatically increased under Erdogan, lots of new infrastructure to
I wasn't correcting you fin25, coups tend not to be very nice, by definition they have suppress opposition. I have no idea what the intentions of those behind this latest coup is, I guess we will soon find out.
1980 is a long time ago.
Seem's like yesterday to me 😉
@fin yes Sky speaking about how military is very much against Turkey becoming a more Islamist country which they felt Erdogan was trying to do
Sat in thessaloniki currently feeling very glad we booked direct flights rather than same as previous via Istanbul!
Early reports of Erdogan having been arrested.

All the best, amigo.

One of the ways you appease a military with a long history of staging coup d'etats is to give them everything they want. It's a dangerous strategy though.
Another strategy is to make them very weak by denying them special status and cutting their budgets, which is a strategy employed in recent times by Argentine civilian governments.
I'll bet Liam Fox had them near the top of the list for his first trade visit
At least he's still got his Sri Lankan contacts though
how did no one get wind of such a huge operation ! Note to next turkish president make sure your spies are upto the job !
oops

seems to be back up in a very limited form.
nope back to service unavailable 😯
Erdogen has fled the country in his private jet apparently
flightradar24, lots of air traffic circling around istanbul
@kimbers it must be more than £50m a year, we do that with Israel. Saudi is $4bn I believe
that news paper site is up and down like a yoyo but the front page came up for a few moments and in the most popular items to the right 2nd item was "Six major problems ahead of Turkey in 2016", coup d'etat wasnt on the list 😯
Klunk 🙂
Ramc I don't see too much circling and all airports are shut. Imwouod think with F16's airborne commercial traffic would get the F out of there. Have many friends due fo fly home from Antalya tomorrow
Edit: just watching two flights landing at Antalya. [s]Nothing at Istanbul[/s] Landing at Istanbull too, nothing taking off
So who is leading this - kemalists or fundamentalists?
Crappers, we're meant to transit through Istanbul Ataturk next week! I really, really hope this doesn't end in bloodshed.
Yeah, I've got friends in Calcan currently. 🙁
I don't think there's many fundamentalists in the Turkish army.
Jeez, didn't know Facebook Live could do this!
Erdogan in airplane, refused landing at #Istanbul, now trying to seek asylum in Germany, US defense officials say,
Nothing like a bit of confidence!
Erdogan signed this 2 days ago.

The law was passed late on Thursday and will make it significantly more difficult for alleged rights abuses to be properly investigated. Furthermore the permission of the military and political leadership of Turkey will be needed before any soldier can face prosecution.
Critics have said this undermines civilian oversight over the military.
Jeez, didn't know Facebook [s]Live[/s] could do this
@lazy there are plenty of things we don't know facebook can do 😐
this could turn very nasty, lots of people coming out on the streets going by that facebook live page!
@ernie general view is that the Army is more secular and democratic than Erdogen
Nothing like a bit of confidence!
I did have to laugh at the very confident statements that he was 100% definitely still in control of the country... being delivered over FaceTime
And they said history had finished with the end of the cold war....
Watching FB Live is crazy! Reports of an explosion in Ankarra now.
Bye Dictator
Looting has begun allegedly, chaos.
EU minister has said Turkish soldiers should disobey orders. So there you have it, EU intervenes and job done 😀
Erdogan has told his supporters to come on the streets and resist.
He is popular, could be very bloody
EU minister has said Turkish soldiers should disobey orders. So there you have it, EU intervenes and job done
Wow! That's low, even for you. Nice time to try and make political gain 🙄
jambalaya - Member@ernie general view is that the Army is more secular and democratic than Erdogen
I'm not sure why you're telling me that - have I claimed that Erdogan is a great secular democrat?
We will have to wait and see how committed to democracy the new junta is though, if they succeed of course.
Bill oddies everywhere apparently. Rozzers outgunned. Footage of Heli gunships have opening up. Navy clearing the ports. Not looking great for Erdo.
"A change in power there would have global ramifications."
Fox news on point as usual 🙂
mental , just seen a boy on my facebook talking about jets flying by his windows, asking what the hells happning, that was an hour or so ago, so i guess some communications may be down now. why i popped on here and turned the news on. hope this doesn't amount to too much, talk of bombs and gunfire though on the news.
This is the movement thought b to be behind the coup
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/09/turkish-police-fethullah-gulen-network
Moderate anti corruption cleric. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fethullah_Gülen
No he WAS popular post-before he stayed on in power and became less moderate. Welcome to state TV and EU idiot thinking. Anyone with brains will know how controlled state media was.
Sadly now it might be bloody still
It's alright, he's found a bottle of drambuie! 😆
This isn't going to end well. Reports of demonstrations and mosques asking for people to protest on the streets.
Only going to take one nervous person with a gun and it's going to go south in a hurry
