The shared house I inhabit is a quiet place in a pretty idyllic location for Oxfordshire. Calm with reasonable access to off-road - even if it is only The Ridgeway and quite a few excellent pubs within a 10 mile radius.
So half an hour ago a confident knock on the door called me away from staring at a couple of butterflies on the window sill and I open it to find two coppers at the door with their vehicle parked out of sight of the house.
No guns - so obviously not here for me - and ten minutes later they leave with one of my housemates under arrest.
A friendly, quiet guy who does seem to get a lot more mail than most.
Oh well we'll find out why eventually. New lodger was in the process of moving in juat as they arrived. He looked quite shocked.

It’s the quiet ones who’re the ones to watch out for!

When describing where I live to an American colleague, she said "That sounds like Midsomer Murders!".

I replied that it is a little, just without the same level of gruesome death! 😁

For balance I once returned to my suburban flat after midnight to find a whole mounted unit of riot police sitting in front of it. No one else in sight. I politely squeezed through them.

I once returned from a ride to the then girlfriends quiet house in The Lakes to find it being robbed, I was so confused about what was going on I thought the bloke asking me if I had any money was a friend of her housemate and we'd run out of milk or something!

I used to live in a remote cottage in Morayshire at the end of a long farm track. Even though you could see the house from quite a distance away it was difficult to see how to get to it as the track skirted round the boundaries of fields and woods - so it just looked like a house out on its own with no access.

It was a Saturday night in the middle of winter and I was relaxing by drinking alone and playing my music as loud as being in the middle of nowhere affords you... and had then turned it up a few times for good measure.

Over the music I heard loud, urgent knocking at the door - stepped out of the living room into a hallway filled with strobing lights - tipsy and disporientated I opened the front door to two coppers backlit by the flashing blue lights on their car. Weirdly there seemed to be flashing coming from behind me too - as if they had the whole place surrounded.

"Are you OK?" they asked.... not the opening line I was expecting

"Errr - yeah"

turning round I realised the other flashing I was seeing was the strip light in my kitchen had gone on the fritz and was flashing on and off urgently.

Passing motorists had seen it across the fields and thought someone had been frantically trying to summon help.

"we've had dozens of calls saying you're in trouble"

They'd been charging around for nearly an hour as more, as more 999 calls came in, trying to approach the house from all directions and not being able to find the track 🙂

Funny you should say this OP.

Just in the back garden watching our partially blind cat pottering about. Hear a load of f'ing stop' stuff, next minute end neighbur's gate is barged open, and a guy flies over the back fence into the brambles behind the neighbour's. I'm expecting someone to fly over my fence, but then see a guy running full pelt across the field with at least 6 coppers chasing him. Legged it off onto the rail line. Just got inside, and there is a cop van outside our house. All go.

I did should out to the fella 'your ****'ed going that way' !!!!

Something in the air today - nothing exciting happens where I am.

He's back!!!
Supposed to be in court for non payment of motoring fines.
Didn't turn up. Tried to ring later in the day to say he couldn't get there but couldn't get through. Didn't realise how much of an offense that was and got carted off.

It’s not the original offence that might be serious, he’s probably been ordered to attend by the court and they don’t take very kindly to people disobeying them. Anything against the (very good in the UK) justice system or courts is taken very seriously - eg perjury, defying court orders etc.

Oh dear. In Ghaha you just ignore it or hand some lolly to the nice officer because he has only stopped you looking for cash for the weekend.

I saw what you did there.
Having spent a short time in Nigeria I can quite understand a somewhat different approach to the law in some countries, a shame he didn't check up on what was important over here.
Sadly he has put his new job at risk and he seems as I said a decent, hard working bloke.

Hehe...

We used to live in Toxteth. In an old Victorian mansion of flats surrounded by 15' high wall and solid wood gate.

We used to eat breakfasts at kitchen table watching two minibuses of burly police putting on body armour and polishing a large red sledgehammer...

One day they did this as normal, only instead of driving out the yard as normal they rang our bell, and when I buzzed then up they ran upstairs like a rugby scrum and removed a couple of neighbours 😲

After they popped in for a quick 'thanks' - they had decided that as we were often there we would be reliable at buzzing them in, as clearly we didn't hide from them...
