Basically it's free money for February and March.
What you splurging on?
I've got one of these as it's STW approved.

Heating oil and fire wood for lack of a *viable* other option.

No. I don't pay February or March. Direct debit is 12 months condensed into 10 months payments.

We spead it out over 52 weeks, they'll get their money when we say they get it because it's easier for us to manage it that way. Every year we get letters, every year they get ignored... 😆

No,

Of course I used to, but I was in Coutts the other day paying in some cheques and they said “Mr Jay, now you’re paying the top rate of Council Tax, it’s worth letting us invest it and give it to them over 10 months - it’s ‘free money’” so I thought why not?

I think I’ll spend mine on English Sparkling Wine (Champagne, for those that don’t know what it is)

Hattingley Valley, to be exact.

I think council tax is the only tax I don't mind paying these days. We have really good local services in the face of continual cuts. I can't believe my neighbours who complain when the bin guys come one day late. Compare this to the 10's of thousands we pay to the morons in london who are destroying the country and a couple of hundred pounds a month sems good value to keep the wheels turning.

10 payments here in Prestwick, always has been.

I'll probably spend it on race entries, like I did last year. 😊

Is anyone else not organised enough to realise this? Or be bothered to do anything about it when they do?

What difference will knowing make? Surely the cost is the same regardless, just spread out over more months?

I have a direct debit account, so it's easy to see a few hundred extra quid in it.

You can choose how you pay. I'm not rich enough to pay mine with only 10 payments.

I'm saving it to cover the 5% increase for the next financial year.

Yup some councils it is over 12 months but it's not just an English thing.

You mean you don’t pay the lot in April and have 11 months off???

I'd rather not spend almost a months wages in one go.

Ha never noticed this either so thanks! 10 DD payment in Leeds here too, no DD in Feb or march then. That's a fair few quid saved (I know it's not money saved, but saved from the monthly bottom line) for two months.

On a related note I'm just starting to go through the process of challenging our council tax rate following on from an MSE post in the new year. Anyone else tried this successfully?

What is this council tax you speak of? Nothing like that in Austria.

Our daughter's just asked to "borrow" £400 to clear her council tax bill for the year. I guess that's where my 2 free months money will go. Easy come, easy go I suppose.
