this morning while putting my shoes on I coughed and felt my back ping, then drove 40 miles to work.

now when I stand I can hardly move, and I get groggy. its stiff, and I'm walking wonkily.

I've taken some ibuprofen but is there anything else I can do?

My father has the same problem. Whenever his back goes he places a hot weater bottle against the offending area for relief.

I feel your pain - did mine leaning into the car to get my little 'un out of her car seat back in October and it is still giving me problems now.

Sit properly, keep taking Ibuprofen, perhaps see a quack, get advice on stretches to help release it.

I've hurt mine sneezing before: Aitchoo! OWW! Not much you can do but take painkillers and wait. My doc prescribes me diazepam to relax my back when it goes but not sure they would help in your case, especially if you have to drive and work. Also, a very hot shower helps me, for a while, plus keeping it warm with a wheat bag or similar.

Ibuprofen probably useless in that situation.

I did a similar thing the day before an activity holiday last year. (Windsurf, Mountain Bike, Waterski etc.). Had to use crutches to get on the plane amd dosed myself with diclofenac and cocdamol that I had from a previous injury.

When I got back a doctor friend said, nah, I should have had a muscle relaxant.

See a doc asap.

Mine went when sat on the LOO ,straining ,not enough chilli.

Feel your pain ,i see a oesteopath when my neck joints seize up,long time injury side effects, then it pushes pressure down spine and causes all sorts of probs, pain killers provide relief ,but you got to treat the cause.

I should have had a muscle relaxant

Yeah the muscle is likely to be spasming and inflamed so the Ibuprofen will help in reducing the swelling and help start the healing process but yes a quack will be able to better advise.

I got a wrist injury where the tendons had become inflamed due to overuse (no jokes please) and the doc recommended the highest dose of Ibuprofen I could take as a first port of call (I won't say what that is, but it is much more than it says on the packet :-O ) and it started the process off and it healed.

You could try standing with your feet apart and then just hanging forward. This helps me when I stand I can hardly move happens. I guess it just gives the muscles a good stretch?

laying on my back and pulling my left leg up to my chest seems to have helped ease things a bit.

hot bath and 8% Belgian beer on the way

A stretch that works for me and a derivation of the one you suggested.
Lie on your back, pull your knees towards your chest keeping feet flat on the floor. When your knees are at the highest point lock your knees together and also ankles, then under control push your legs over to one side keeping knees/ankles locked to the horizontal, then bring back to the vertical, repeat for the other side. I used to do 10 reps for each side.

This exercise should be done slowly, under control and not pushed if you body is fighting it. You should also try to keep your backside flat on the floor. The exercise puts a good twist on your spine and relieved the pain when my back was knacked.

Still use it now just to keep my back supple. As others have said, Brufen will work but is not a long term solution, for that you need opiates!

Hope it is sorted soon, you have my sympathy.

I felt a twinge in my neck last night in't shower. Weren't too bad, but was a little concerned...

Woke up at 6am today in absolute agony, coon't move, was crying with the pain. 😥

Fortunately it's eased up a lot, and ibuprofen has helped.

Off out to meet Geoffj for a pint in Greenwich now! 😀

I'm not sure if it's been said but after it repairs itself start doing some core exercises. Have a google to see what you like, I prefer stuff with a swiss ball but that is at a gym.

I feel your pain, Diazepam is good to relax the muscles (I only take one, which knocks me out for about 24hrs...don't drive!!) which gets things started, ibruprofen good to reduce inflammation take for a minimum 5 days, cocodamol for the pain, I find applying ice to the affected part helps but don't overdo it (on for 3mins off for 20mins back on etc until you get bored).

But really go to the docs as you need to find out what drugs are best for you and they may be able to refer you, or I found a great physio after the third for fourth event of back failure(not thro NHS unfortuanly as its about £30/session.) (tried a chiro in the past but don't like the bone crunching... good luck!
