My house has rear lane running at the back of the garden which you can access from a wooden gate set in a wall. That lane is separated from public roads by 6ft locked metal gates.

My wooden gate is wrecked, rotten and old so I want to get a new gate wooden made and fitted with a keyed lock that you can use from both sides.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much I should look to pay for someone to do the complete job: make the gate, paint the gate, fit the gate?

How big is the gate? Can the metal gates be opened to allow access? Do the gateposts need any work or replacing? Where in the country are you?

Can you not fit it?
(Clue: it's not difficult)
Paint.... Huh?

Why don't you get some quote? It depends on a million things.

Really depends what you want. If you already have a gate and it’s a standard size some of the off the peg gates from your local b&q should fit, salvage and reuse the hard ware, whatever treatment you want (note this can be pricy if you want the the good stuff, preserve and then paint). Then if you aren’t doing it yourself paying for a day or maybe 2s labour, probably two as they will need the preserver and paint to dry.

Do it yourself, salvage parts, cheap gate and cheap paint. £300~£400

Some else to do it, bespoke gate, hardwood, new fancy hardware, expensive preserver and paint £1000~£2000

I could make you a bespoke softwood gate, fitted to existing posts with mortice deadlock for approximately £1000. No idea where you are but if London or south east expect a bit more.

I had a gate made with a welded metal frame and wooden facing. Including a cylinder lock, £500 fitted.

Wickes have upped their range lately. This might suit:

https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Framed-Ledged+Braced-Flat-Top-Timber-Gate---915-x-1829-mm/p/225237

And to secure it, I like these, have fitted them at home and for a couple of neighbours who have seen them at mine.

Add some hinges and some timber for a frame, a finish, and you're into the best part of £250. Fetching and fitting isn't hard for someone who's done a few, without being a pro, but painting is time consuming, especially if you need to make several trips to add coats. I'd say a minimum of £450 for a joiner or handyman to do whole job, but could go higher depending on a million things.

We had a soft wood door with hardwood frame and key lockable both sides added to our side passage this year unpainted for £650 plus vat. South East.

Thanks for your replies espcially those with prices.

I do have a quote for £750 in south Wales which sounds like it is a bit high but not too far out from what people have said but I may still go for it as I probably have other projects I would be better to spend the time on.

The gate will be 900 x 2,000mm and made from painted 'Scandinavian redwood' which I think is a fancy way of saying pine. It would be set within a timber frame with brick wall to either side and masonary above. The end product would essentially look like a painted version of the links in midlifecrashes post. You can get to it in a van via the metal gates so easy jobsite.

Yes the price includes making the three side frame (side, side, top)

Oh and to add the making and painting would be done off site in a workshop and then fitted here.

Painting in a workshop is normal tbh or the bare minimum primer.

900mm wide? That's frame ledged and braced 150mm jambs and head 250mm bottom rail. 18mm t&g

Scandinavian redwood

Scandinavian redwood generally grows slower than more southern-grown timber and is a bit more dense. It tends to take screws and paint better then whitewood. It also costs a bit more

So I said no to the quote for getting the gate made then discovered the size I need (750 x 1930) is non-standard so the Wickes/B&Q ones not really an option as they are wider and if I try to cut the width down I may well affect some of what is holding them together and still too short. But I have found several places that can make custom sizes and deliver.

The frame is in good condition so all I need is the gate itself but it will have to be custom. Struggling to find the difference between these (apart from cosmetics of the websites!):
https://gatesandfencesuk.co.uk/guildford-side-gate/ at £295
https://www.gatewrights.co.uk/classicsidegate.html at £188

I suspect I am overthinking it but any advice or recommendations of another option that someone has experience of as I am generally not a fan of internet pot luck!
