We are about to have some building work done on our house and there is a chance we may need a new boiler becuase of it.

Just wondering what rough cost of purchase and fitting (combi boiler) would be to check we have enough in the contigency fund.

Thanks

I recently got a Ravenheat, 24kW IIRC, £500 B&Q, recommended by Mattoutandabout here, but dissed by the installer, who I think mentioned Potterton?

As for fitting, I paid £800 but that included re-jigging plumbing from older system and a 30 foot long 22mm supply pipe installation.

It feels a little underpowered (Flat is not the warmest due to age, type, location etc) but your installation costs should be much lower.

We had ours done late last year. Replaced an old floor stander in the kitchen with a new Worcester/Bosch Greenstar Ri in the upstairs airing cupboard. Our's is a three bed semi with a single storey extension with another bedroom. Over the winter period the house was the warmest it's been in the 8 years we've been here without the boiler being at max output and the thermostat on 20C.

Managed to salvage a few bits from the old system, timer, circulating pump, thermostat but needed a changeover valve.

With rerouting of pipework, flushing the system and the fitment of a muck-filter system came to just under £4K. Work included the electrical work as well.

Boiler was installed as hot water and heating and we kept the hot water tank as I've heard too many stories about combi systems breaking down and with three women in the house the thought of no hot water for their showers/hair washing etc was not a pleasant thought.

I got some very good advice from someone on the old forum who is a heating engineer but I can't remeber his name.

thanks. It's a combi system already jova, we've only been without hot water once and that was due to someone being crap at fitting a rad!

Seems like a big difference in price though, I'll take Cynic-al's and just ignore yours 😉

For balance mrsflash, fitting of a Worcester/Bosch combi in my place last year came in at just under £3k in London. 🙂

Had to have a combi replaced last November, total cost was £2.3K included replacing gas feed pipe to recommended 22mm diameter, flushing etc. We already had TRV's on all radiators. System far more efficient than old one.

boiler cost can be anything from £250 for a 24kw heatline capriz to £1300 for a 42kw bosch greenstar. I've fitted both and plenty in between, just depends what you want to spend. Nothing wrong with the heatlines, sargon range in particular as they have stainless heat exchangers and off the shelf standard parts inside. Any boiler, irrespective of price will fail if not installed correctly.

For a basic straight swap, probably in the range of £2-300, half a day.

that is an ideal scenario though and it rarely is

Thanks TFM. We'd only be doing a straight swap and only if ours is too old to be revented - a garage is being built where the existing boiler vents to.
