I need one of these for a gopro, and went out into the city yesterday to get something. Preferred an actual shop as I dont know much about them and was wanting a bit of advice so I didn't come away with the wrong thing.
I did see them on ebay, but again a large choice and no idea as to exactly which I needed, hence opting for the shop route. But what I did see was they sell for about £30 for Scandisk extreme pro SDXC 128gb.
So thinking this was how much they were, I got to Jessops in Glasgow city center and asked at the door(Had bike with me).
Guy goes away and comes back with about the same thing I see selling on ebay and states £89

£89 ?? am i missing something ?, thought maybe £35 or 40 tops but 89 i thought is that the most expensive one in the shop or something, and Jesssops is a specialist camera shop, so you'd think they would have a range of prices, but all they had was this one, and even had to go to the back shop to get it.
So is 30-40 quid the correct price, or is there some other aspect Im unaware of, and can anyone confirm what exactly it is i need.
It's for the hero7 white- so no bells or whistles - Max size it takes I believe is 128gb
It looked pretty much this one he was offering, and at about £25 seems very fair to me, but im clueless as to these things so really need the advice, only I'm not for being ripped off.

Be very, very careful with SD cards from eBay. They're often fake.
Amazon are good to go (as long as its sold / delivered by Amazon and not a 3rd party seller).

High street is notorious for crazy prices on memory cards, especially Jessops and camera/tech shops.
Don't but memory cards from eBay unless you're absolutely sure it's a reputable seller.
Amazon (ensure sold by Amazon) or mymemory as mentioned above are my go-to for memory cards.
I think SD cards are things that people generally don't know the price of (not least because they fluctuate so rapidly) so it's an easy markup. The cost in supermarkets is hilarious.
As others have said, a reputable retailer is key. There are many, many counterfeit cards out there, including 8GB cards hacked to report 64GB which work fine until you try and write 9GB to them. If you buy from Amazon always get retail packaging rather than "hassle free" or whatever they call it, it'll cost you an extra sixpence but it'll swerve the dodgy resellers.
It must be where bricks and mortar shops make their money. These days pretty every one will look up the price of a TV, camera, phone, etc before buying so they can't be much more expensive. The extras are usually way over priced. Leads, chargers, and as you have found out, SD cards. It's been that way for years. They are probably a bit less reactive to the changing prices too.

£89 is a ripoff though.
They are always really expensive in camera shops and places like curry’s. People go in buy a camera and the up sell them the SD card for a massive mark up. As above I’ve bought loads from Amazon and had no problems but always from Amazon and not a third party.
Oh, and at places like Jessops (are they still going?) the thinking is probably that it's a value-added item. Ie, you don't go in to buy a card, you go in to buy a camera and whilst you're doing that they try to sell you storage, extra batteries, camera bag, UV filters... That's likely where they turn their profit and their sales commission.

Yeah Argos is pretty good. MyMemory or 7DayShop seem to be legit also.
Think the high street shops know most people who are using them need one instantly so price accordingly.

I bought one of these few years ago for a bridge camera, no probs so far.
if you go for amazon make sure you do 'sold by amazon.co.uk' - the resellers on there are as likely to be fake as ebay are
A few years back Which did an article where they bought about 10 memory cards online to find out which were fake, and to compare the fakes with the genuine ones. But it didn't work out, because they all turned out to be fake. Apparently it partly happens far enough up the supply chain that even completely reputable retailers buying through good channels end up with fakes- genuine articles being swapped with fakes etc.
You've admitted to not knowing what you needed, so went to a shop so you could buy the correct one - there's a cost to bricks&mortar which needs 'contributing' to...
As an aside, a 64Gb card gives me 10 hrs of GoPro recording capacity... 128 is bigly.
I thought that part of the problem with Amazon is that no matter whether you buy them from Amazon or a seller who is fulfilled by Amazon they all come out of the big "SanDisk 128Gb Memory Card" crate, which has been filled by what Amazon have purchased and whatever crap the other sellers have sent them, so the whole thing is a bit of a crapshoot anyway?
You cited a SanDisk extreme pro card. This is one of the top tier cards for speed. That's why it's expensive.
With gopros and the like you can normally get away with a lower speed card. (Still buy that brand.)
You should be okay with a standard v30 rated card. So that would be SanDisk Extreme for 100mbps on the go pro. Much cheaper.
Fast memory cards are still expensive relative to consumer stuff. Cfast 2.0 for our reds/black magic cameras are £500 for 512GB.
Never had a problem with SD cards from Amazon but only buy from them in the full packaging and only buy SanDisk.
Never had a failure and only one has been DOA and that was replaced immediately.
I'm a big believer in having two or three smaller cards and swap them out so I don't have all my footage / photos on one card and regularly back up to computer of course.
I can't think of many scenarios where I'd need more than 32gb but for the price difference usually get 64's
