Cool story about the evacuation of African Jews from Ethiopia/Sudan
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-43702764
Fact is sometimes stranger than fiction. It doesn't say exactly when this happened or did I miss that?
The only thing was, unbeknown to the guests or the authorities, the Red Sea diving resort was entirely fake. It was a front, set up and run for more than four years in the early 1980s by operatives from the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency.
References to being rumbled in March 1982 and oeprations carrying on through to early 1985. Beats being shot at in the South Atlantic I'll bet...

From the article
It was a front, set up and run for more than four years in the early 1980s by operatives from the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency.
They've not had a great experience subsequently, unfortunately.
The discrimination faced by the Jews of Ethiopia, the only black group to arrive in Israel by virtue of being Jewish, however, has remained largely unheard.
Somehow the clear reality of daily and institutionalised racism toward Ethiopian Jews is not spoken about enough, although some buds are starting to sprout as a result of last year's demonstrations and other acts of protest that received international media coverage.
I read this on the BBC website earlier, it was excellent I thought
Two points I found amusing
- army units coming to stay with them, without knowing what was going on
- having to escape and leaving tourists in the hotel
I saw the 80s bits, I was hoping for a bit more specific than back in the 80s. Plausible deniability for the military I suppose. Thanks for pointing those dates out.
Dunt get more 80's than this...

My dad was a dentist and had several working holidays in Israel in the 1980s treating Ethiopian Jews as part of the resettlement programme. What Israel did was truly good in saving them.
What Israel did was truly good in saving them.
On the face of it yes, but actually when a humanitarian disaster is unfolding, only being interested in saving a select few because they share a belief in the same sky fairy is pretty poor.
It is very cool story though, just a shame such effort couldn't be focussed on providing a better outcome for all.
