As some are aware, we have been looking at buying a house in Leeds. It hasnt quite gone to plan and are fed up with being out bid on houses in Chapel A, Moortown etc. We have started to look at Cookridge, initially rejected based upon the map due to the proximity to the airport!

However, found a nice house and the commute works well for both of us. How is it living round there? We are looking on the west side, well away from Tinshill. Any issues with theft beyond normal standards for West Yorkshire (which is disturbingly high!). What is the riding like? How do people find living under the flight path?

Also seen a place in Guiseley that looks good, which works for my commute though still less well for the OH. Its on the east side, so also possibly suffers from the flight path issue!

Cookridge isn't too bad, doubt it's any worse that anywhere else in Leeds for break-ins, probably better than Chapel Allerton or Moortown. You can get a nice bike run out to Otley and Harewood as well.

I don't remember any flight path issues but it's several years since family lived there so could be worse now.

Not sure on Guisely, it used to be OK but the few trips through recently, seems to be traffic queue hell.

Some very nice parts of Guisely but the traffic is always bad so be careful. Both places are decent for riding, but guisely especially so. It has Otley, Esholt, Baildon Moor and Calverley woods all within 5 miles or so.

Regarding the crime, have you used the police website to check the crime stats? It has a breakdown of crimes reported on each street for each month, I found it really useful when I was looking.

That has been my brief view too. I will travel by train, but the OH has to travel by car at all times of the day and it could drive him mad!

We almost moved there. We were mainly looking at Cookridge, Adel, Horsforth & Otley.

Road riding would be fine. No idea on off-road, but it's better than being further into town.

Great riding all around that part of north Leeds. But the traffic into Leeds city centre can be awful, but there are good train links from Horsforth and Guiseley. Actually if I worked in the centre I'd cycle in anyway, it's all downhill and takes 25 mins. Not so on the way back!

So where did you end up chakaping and what put you off Cookridge in the end?

Aye, I fortunately can get the train really easily. Having lived for a couple of weeks just off Woodhouse Road, the idea of riding in does somewhat scare me!

Other side of the Pennines, family matters intervened.

...there's the canal if you're bothered by traffic, bell essential as it's dog walker central.

Cookridge is fine if you plan on commuting by train (Horsforth station) for Leeds city centre. As mentioned above, check https://www.police.uk for crime stats. That website has saved us a lot of headaches in the past.
