or i think thats what i want to do anyway......

uncovered a load of miniDV camcorder tapes and a hi8 tape too up in the loft.  theyll contain lots of family snippets from when the kids were small, so id like to be able to flit between them somehow, watching them on our tv.

we still have the miniDV camcorder (no hi8 camcorder now tho), and ive had it plugged through tv and we've watched some, but its a bind fast-forwarding and rewinding trying to find stuff that theres no real structure to.  ideally id like the lot on somethings digital that can be plugged into tv and we can search through (relatively) quickly.  so a usb or hard drive?

had a quick look at asda and snappysnaps type sites that transfer snaps to usb, but none of them specifically mention miniDV or hi8.

what options do i have?

firstly is there any way of getting my miniDVs onto laptop or usb drive maybe with the equipment ive got?

secondly, what about the hi8 tape?  not really worth buying a second hand camcorder just to play around with this one tape...... can any shops just take the lot and give me back a drive with all the separate clips on?

thanks

I'd had the same idea for a while. got a usb converter thing from aldi or lidl the other week for £20. worked for my sony minidv camcorder. copies the video as you watch it. comes with all the correct cables to hook up to your camcorder. as for hi-8, i have one cassette of jrs first xmas that i need to convert but dont have a hi-8 camcorder. been looking on ebay but they are going for stupid money. online seem to want £20-£30 for a single tape to dvd conversion.

linky for what i bought, porbably gone now but for an idea

If your miniDV camera has a DV output connector then you can plug directly into your PC  with a fire wire cable and use Windows Movie Maker or similar.

Hi-8 will need a DAC i think as its an analogue format

There are a couple of services that you can post them off to.

I think Snappy Snaps will do some types - not sure about hi8

still got that camcorder, still got the firewire cable, but alas the pc i used to use back in the day is no more, just looked and my current macbook doesnt have a firewire port.  do windows pc's have them these days?  could always ask a mate if so.....

thanks, ill look out for one of those.

and thanks for those links gobuchul, didnt know 'video grabbers' existed.  and that link to the video99 place seems the best option if i cant get sorted myself.

cheers
