How do you avoid giving them a slap?
Oh...sorry, I thought this was a call for control freaks.
Give them a mental slap by doing the opposite of what they demand.
Sounds like the op is struggling with being unable to control something...
You ignore them.
Honestly; it totally boils their piss.
OP, do you want to control a control freak then? 😀
Let me tell you exactly what you need to do.
1. Set some boundaries.
2. Sit down with the person and discuss the situation.
3. Biscuits.
Give them a kick.
Sometimes listen to them and sometimes do the opposite purely at random. Will do their heads in far more.
Divorce?
Grin and tell them they are only jealous because the voices don't speak to them.
Slap yourself?
That and some people you would never tire of slapping....
Update.
A phone call has sorted it all out. Basically I said that I have done the requested task twice and doing it a third time with some micro adjustment was not and would never be an option.
He also knows that I'm pretty handy at throwing axes into targets.
The joys of being a Cub Leader!

I heard about someone who would put an obvious deliberate mistake into any job he did, which gave control freaks something to pick up on.
If you are lucky and have two control freaks to play with, try playing one off against another?
Then sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy the show.

That's called professionalism, not control.
Is AXE throwing in the scout training now officially ?

His point was that these people felt that despite paying him for his expertise, to justify their position they had to pick out something. So he gave it to them and they left the rest alone.
I've tried it and it actually works pretty well.
I see a need for a Cthulhu badge in among that lot!
