Minimum separation is 1000 ft in controlled airspace. Aircraft route along airways in the sky - very much like a road structure.

It’s very likely you saw 4 aircraft with minimum separation all headed the same way, not actually that close at all. At high enough altitude to produce contrails, there is no way you could pick out separately 4 ac in real close formation. Hope that makes sense?

Mil fast jets almost always fly in formation when operating together, especially when transiting.

It might look it from the ground but they’re likely about 1/4 mile from each other, so not close formation

Often get the same here over Stourbridge about 0930 every other morning. Just assume it’s American airforce from east anglia flying back to states. I’ve the last week have noticed a lot more regular airforce jet noise heading West, assume training exercises in Wales

If you recall where you were and what time you saw the planes, then look on Flightradar24 and you will see all the details of what model the planes were, their airline, flight number, elevation, where they were from, where they were going to and what chemicals they were spraying over the sheeple etc

Yes - "close formation" was a few hundred feet apart from what I saw but obviously could be more ( small / far away) but they certainly were flying together and in formation Two in the lead next to each other, the other two in identical positions trailing the lead pair. all the gaps were the same. Shame I didn't get a photo. Its just something I have never seen before.

At the same time there was a plane coming into Edinburgh airport much lower down and right underneath the 4.

Ah.. I was using it to watch planes at the Farnborough Airshow a few years back. Was fun to watch the A380 circling the place, but most of the other stuff wasn't on there.

If they are in Close enough formation and they are considered as one by air traffic . Mmakes it easier as only one of them has to jabber to ATC, and ATC waste less time dealing with 4 lots of separations.

Those Falcon 20’s are doing ECW work, doing threat simulation for the military.

Those ones are based at EMA, rest of the fleet is at Bournemouth to cover the southern approaches.

They always fly in 2ship or 4ship formation, with military stuff alongside. (Insider knowledge! 😉)

We had 4 F15s over at low level yesterday.

If they were over Edinburgh flying roughly NW, they could have flown out of ne of the bases in Cambridgeshire, and be heading across to either meet a tanker on route or maybe be heading for a base in the NEcof the States. They may have been part of the detachment who have been based at Fairford, which has been reopened as a functioning US Air Force base, although it has been hosting B-52H and B-1B bombers since 2014, so those planes may have been a flight originating from there.
When you live in the south of the U.K. seeing lots of military activity is pretty much an everyday occurrence, especially in and around Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Oh, and ‘Chemtrails’ are not, and never have been a real thing, just another imaginary ‘deep-state’ plot for the hopelessly inadequate to get excited about.

I once saw 3 trails very close together heading out over the North Sea above Co Durham (3 aircrafts worth) Grabbed my 20x70 bins & could plainly see it was a Victor K2 refuelling 2 Vulcans.
This was in the late 80's mind.

Whenever some sadly misguided muppet posted yet another chemtrail rant on Fb, I’d respond by posting up a bunch of photos showing vapour/contrails over London during the Battle of Britain, which was a bit before the introduction of jet-powered aircraft, and this particular quote:
