I've been reading up on developing my essay writing. One article states things to avoid, an example being "contractions ("don't", "aren't", "it's")".
What are you supposed to do? Go back to writing do not, are not, it is or it has?

I know some of you that are members of the spelling and grammar police will be clued up on this.

Gibber. Old rule, repeated without questioning. Yes for an exceptionally formal audience, no for everyone else.

stever - Yes for an exceptionally formal audience

It is for Uni, that is the only reason why I am reading up on it...I have never bothered before!

I think STW represents an exceptionally formal audience, at least.

Yes. And remember not to split infinitives or dangle prepositions. And do not start sentences with 'and'. Oh bugger!

I just submitted my PhD thesis and made sure all the contractions were removed.

Mr Salmon - Are you positive you removed them all? It is hard work when they are what you are used to writing all the time. 🙂

Just write normally then do a Search and Replace when you finish 😀

I should have said "all the ones I could see when I skimmed through it at the last minute". How many can there be, right?
