weird freaking stuff....
I got to 2.30 and started to feel uncomfortable.
Dance - no , alternative circus act- yes.
With senior on this one, some sort of performance but not dance.
Interesting. It is definitely dance and the strength and control needed are amazing, but it is the subtext that is most disturbing. The woman is almost entirely passive and at no point in the story that they are telling does she progress beyond that passivity. That is why I find it a bit controlling. With those skills they could have made much more of a story. They ended up with a series of clever pseudo gymnastic moves with a very floppy woman.
Shame really as they are both very talented dancers to put a series of moves like that together.
(Pseuds corner here we come.....)
is clearly dance, needs context though

Do you not suppose that that could be the point; the intention?
It is very much a dance, the rhythm being held as much in what is alluded to as in the physical movement.

Or that.
I kind of get the point, but if it was simply the rag doll (which I have now found is the title) then there are mixed messages when the girl produces some of the amazingly strong moves and then becomes entirely relaxed again. Trying desperately not to use the words flaccid and floppy in this context as I am pretty sure that is not what is going on, but you never know 😉
In any case as a piece of art it has got a lot of people talking about it so fair play to them. Modern dance is so physically demanding and often seen by so few people that this bit of publicity can only be a good thing.
I wasn't necessarily saying that it was the point, just that it could be. I don't know if the artists are expressing or reflecting; perhaps it's explorative. You know, it's easy to take it literally and see the misogynistic messages, but it takes a (slightly) different feeling if, as just one possible example, it's considered as a 'solo' piece played out by two people; indicative of an individual's internal dialogue or struggle. It's impossible to apply any accusation to the artists without knowing their motivation. I really do agree with you that's it's a very impressive piece both in terms of content/stimulation and the skill/strength required to perform it.
yes there is an element of her being controlled... but the unsettling in the title was referring to her almost lifeless movement... ragdoll-esque.
i'm pretty sure that they are not trying to promote misogynistic dance routines for the future.
I don't often get to see anything like so I'm probably not best placed to try an interpretation of it but it was spellbinding even on a purely superficial level. Not something I expected to see today, but it was great.
I had a watch, which is quite amazing as contemporary dance is something I've avoided for the past 30 odd years.
Nothing unsettling or disturbing to me, just skill, strength and clever choreography. Couldn't listen to the music, so had something else playing in my earphones. Don't know if that would've made any difference.
Thanks for posting anyway. Will no longer take the piss out of my mate when he says he's gone to a contemp dance show.

Did you think that's what I was saying?
If it's contemporary dance you're after Sylivie Guillem is your girl (well was, I think she's retired now). From about 50secs in. Stunning control and strength.
I much preferred the OP's one with the music I had on earlier! It's hardly dancing with hardly any music!
Good... thanks. Looks like he's doing the work, but I suspect her role is waaaay harder....
Is is dance, or acrobatics? Don't care.
