Just booked a short break, 4 days, in a little cabiny thing up there in October. Can any locals / regular visitors give me a few pointers on things to do and places to go? Not afraid of wind and rain and hills, I'm Welsh , we are immune. Quite partial to fishing, and unfortunately cant take the bikes this time.
Cheers in advance.

No bikes!? Bad decision.
Hiking, drinking and eating.. In that order.
Do you have small people to entertain also?

Stop in at the bakehouse in greenodd on your way through.. then chesters cafe seems fairly popular with a flat walk to a pub at the other end if its too nasty to walk up the hills.

lob some stones into hodge close and go cow tipping when the farmers not looking

No kids, offloaded the little pests onto Gran and Big Sis for a week. Result!
Cow tipping? We had a version we did when we were kids where we waited for a high tide, rowed over the salt marsh to where the cows were marooned on the small island, and whacked them on the arse with a paddle.

Copper mines are worth a poke around, cathedral cave, Tarn hows, Grizedale forest, trip on the gondola, get the launch over to brantwood for kullshur, Langdales/elterwater.
Drunken Duck, Chester's, blacksmiths at Broughton mills, manor at oxen park, crown in coniston, the cafe on the way out to yew tree farm and yew tree farm for eats
Fishing - coniston is pretty meh, yew tree Tarn, Ghyll head, bigland hall for fly, bigland hall, ulverston canal or any of the lakes for coarse

Hire a sail boat on Coniston,
Climb old man of Coniston,
Have a pint of Coniston bitter in the Black bull,
Go for a wander over to the Langdales (sorry that one doesn’t include a Coniston reference)
Stop at More bakery in Staveley on the way over.
Hire bikes from Ghylside bikes in Ambleside.
