Hi all,
So, things have gone from 0 to 100 pretty quick with our house sale and after a couple of manic and stressful weeks we have agreed a sale on our house and reserved a new house just on the outskirts of Congleton. Now I've driven through Congleton several times and we have now been for a walk through the town and it seems pretty nice. Quieter than where we are and great location, espcially back up the road to Manc.
Anyone here live in the area and give some general feedback? I can see there is a local MTB club and some trails close by on the cloud?
Be great to get some positive words.
Peaks on doorstep, some nice road riding round there, and not far from M6. where are you working ? Commute to Manchester is a bit of a drag via roads/M6 M56
Yeah, it's a nice part of the world around there, my sister lives in Sandbach and I quite like it. That part of Cheshire is not too "orange faced women driving white Range Rovers" (yet, maybe), and easy access to really nice road riding. It'll be a drive to anything MTB-y probably but not miles.
And, randomly, I was really impressed by the big Tesco on the Macclesfield/Manchester road when I popped in at the weekend.
I work from home so the morning commute isn't much of an issue, girlfriend is the same although the odd trip into the Manchester office for her.
Good road riding is great to hear, where I am now in South Manchester it takes 20-30 minutes before I'm away from the busy roads.
I've been here for 6 years and love it....but then I was in Stoke for 29 years, so anywhere would be an upgrade on that.
Pro's
Good sense of community in town.
Loads of independent businesses.
Loads of great bars.
Con's
Trains are shite.
It can be a faff to get to Manchester.
Orange women in a 'Range' are ever increasing.
MTB wise not much, Bosely cloud is okay, not really that much there though. If gravel is your thing then there's not much either.
As above, 30 mins to South Peak, so loads of riding/climbing/hiking. I believe that the schools are alright too.
Orange women in a ‘Range’ are ever increasing.
It's all those tossers moving in from South Manchester 😉
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Tom. Best not tell the girlfriend about the trains! She would use them to get into Manchester. Suppose she could do the short drive to Macclesfield.
I'm guessing the rise of the Range is due to people moving in from outside the town. I'm bringing a very boring Octavia. Although it's not signed sealed and delivered just yet, lots to go wrong.
Road cycling - lovely flat lanes to the West and horrible steep climbs to the East.
Mountain biking - Roches not far away.
Then there's Beartown Brewery.
Suppose she could do the short drive to Macclesfield.
Or Sandbach, direct trains to Manc (and Manc Airport)
How often is she going to be commuting to Manc? The train there from Congleton takes an hour and there's only one an hour I think?
From Macc it's much easier but Macc traffic can be horrid (I work there 2 days per week)
I have an aunt in congleton- whenever we’ve visited it seems a nice place. Her deceased husband was from stoke originally so again the reasons for choosing to live there are clear. Great neighbours who have really looked after her since he passed away a few years back. Feels like a proper community. Decent schools I believe- their son did well. Feels more staffs to Cheshire in vibe to me.
Sod the local area recommendations, you're going to be oatcake territory! Enjoy!! As has been said lovely road riding in gods country of Cheshire (can you tell I'm from Cheshire). I hear the off piste over Macclesfield Forest is really good but you'll need to pick a locals brain, give @oscillatewildly a shout as he's not a million miles away from where you're moving to but be aware he moves like something brown off a stick!
Thanks all. I know Macclesfield fairly well, including the trails there. It will be nice to have more options within a shorter distance. Currently Rivington is closest and that is 40 minutes at best in the car.
How often is she going to be commuting to Manc?
No set days, it's ad hoc currently. So maybe 2/3 days a month.
I've worked there off and on for 5 years. Don't road bike towards Holmes Chapel at commute times someone will kill you. Same with Alsager direction lovely country roads used like motorways. Great views and hill climbs up to the big hill with a ruin on top I can't remember the name of has to be some great descents off that.
I hear the off piste over Macclesfield Forest is really good but you’ll need to pick a locals brain,
I live near the forest and would be happy to show you around. I’m shockingly out of shape though. Used to work in Congleton and the traffic going the opposite way in to Macc looked crap at peak times. Congleton seems like a nice town. The canal towpath is a nice bimble to Marple and back
Mow Cop!
