I'm putting my Mk1 MX5 back on the road but the headlight are very poor. (It is the Mk1 with the round 7" pop up headlights). A friend said I should try some newer technology light bulbs but I have no idea what I should be looking for.

Amazon/eBay have so many different types my head is spinning. Help.

When I've replaced my MX5 Mk1 headlights I've had to fit whole new sealed units and have not been able to replace the individual bulbds.
Might be worth checking before spending loads on shiny new bulbs

Osram Nightbreakers. Really big improvement on everything I've put them in - in my Porsche 924, which by rights should have had crap headlights, it was just like driving a modern car with them in.

Worth changing sealed beams to wipac crystals and fit real bulbs. Sealed units are shit.

Osram nightbreakers as already mentioned, unless you have a Volvo V50, no halogen type system can improve the rubbish lenses that come fitted to them. Work great in everything else.

I had osram nightbreakers in my subaru, utterly superb, 65w so technically illegal but if aimed correctly nobody would ever know.
Bought the same ones for my renault scenic, not so much of a difference in that car, as the standard bulbs were better i guess.
Beware of ebay, ive seen guys at work with supposed ‘100w’ bulbs in, still not as good as genuine osram.
I had genuine 100w bulbs in an old volvo 440, i never ever used main beam in that car, it wasn’t necessary.
I will also add, i pay attention to my headlight aim, and never get flashed.

I put a set of these in my MK1 the other year. Seemed to make a bit of a difference but not a massive transformation.

https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-H4-Ring-XENON-ULTIMA-Car-Headlight-Bulbs-120-Brighter-H4-Pair/321638950898?epid=1942338726&hash=item4ae32ce7f2:g:ywMAAOSwm8VUsYIV

Getting the securing rings off the lens was a PITA from memory and I had to re-adjust everything when I put them back as I’d loosened off some of the screws too much.

Don't forget to factor in that in general an uprated bulb will run hotter, and normally have a much shorter life IME.

Thanks everyone for your help. Today I fitted some Wipac unites with Night Breaker bulbs. Such a difference! Thank you. The car is now safe to drive after dusk.

Good stuff. The nightbrakers in my iveco had a similar difference 🙂

The led spotters I bought can become worklights under the awning instead now 🙂

Thank you everyone. Wipac lamps fitted yesterday with Night Breaker bulbs, wow, what a difference. Very pleased indeed.
