Outlaws have got the wife a laptop from America with Windows 7 and some antivirus from Webroot.

Do I need to put anything else on it before she is unleashed on the internet?

(This is an Apple which is my excuse for not knowing).

Thanks in advance.

The standard STW responce is download the free Microsoft Security Essentials and use Malwarebytes for anything that gets through.

I do just that and bar one thing that my GF picked up from looking at mathes lessons (she is a teacher!) which Malwarebytes got, MSE has been very good.

He's typing on an Apple, and doesn't know about Windows stuff.

Oh I see.

Microsoft MSE is the current favourite yes. Windows Defender and Firewall should already be enabled and on by default - Windows will tell you if they're off.

What xiphon said.

Ok so basically let it do it's own thing and get that Malwarebytes.

Cheers.

No, you need to download MSE. You also need to uninstall any other AV that you have otherwise they will fight and cause your machine to be rather useless.

Windows Update it till it bleeds. Make sure you're using the latest versions of Java and anything made by Adobe (where applicable).

Webroot is well regarded I believe, but it's probably a trial or a 'first x months free' model. You'd be shocked at how many people use stuff like this just because it was on the PC when they got it; I've spoken to loads of people who signed up with AOL back in 'the day' for this reason alone, and that was just because they'd bundled an icon of the desktop.

The 'subscription' runs until the end of 2011. I've uninstalled that now and downloaded the MSE thing

The Malwarebytes is either a free one or a pay for one, I take it the free one is ok?

Malwarebytes is free as a cleanup tool, paid for as a protection tool. Personally, I wouldn't bother if you've done everything else here ^^ and are capable of not running anything stupid.

Now, I'm not saying that the free Microsoft anti-virus isn't good. Our Tech Dept. (Jon) says he uses it and is quite happy with it, BUT...

I bought some: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/

It makes me feel safer, possibly the Security Blanket Syndrome, however.
