I have a Windows 10 laptop connected to an HD monitor via a HDMI cable. The monitor displays the same as the laptop screen, so not really dual screen.
When I have the laptop open the monitor display is crisp and clear, as I would want/expect. But when I close the laptop it feels like the resolution on the monitor drops and everything is less crisp.
Is there a setting or something obvious I've missed? It's not the end of the world having the laptop open, but it'd be a bit neater if I could close it.

With the laptop closed, right click the desktop select display settings and make sure that the resolution is correct.

Also check that closing the laptop doesn't do something in the power settings that affects the screen - like dimming it (I can't think of a setting that does, but it doesn't mean there isn't one!)
Last thing - in the display settings you're able to extend your desktop across both displays, if having more pixels to work with is useful to you.
Try right clicking on the large desktop and select "Display Settings".
You can then check the resolution.
As Sobriety has pointed out, you can also extend your desktop across the 2 displays. Really useful to me.
So, logging back in on Monday morning.
The display settings remain unchanged whether the laptop is closed or open.
Do I need to play with the scaling settings maybe?
Play with the settings for the second display - I'm guessing 1920 x 1080 - it should save the settings - I leave the laptop screen open for Teams or email, the other two spreadsheets etc.
