I have a Lenovo X230, running windows 7 Professional. The sound for podcasts, videos only works if the video is from a link...say a forum or something. Once i have sound then I can go to any video site and get the sound. This works up to the time I switch the computer off. On starting up again If i go straight to Youtube or other video sites I get no sound.
Can anyone shed any light on whats going on?
Go to lenovo site, download the latest hardware drivers.
But it's probably more likely to be a browser issue, does sound work straight away if you play a video or music file that's on the machine?
Does does the problem exist in a different browser, Firefox vs Chrome etc? If so just uninstall the browser and download and install a fresh one.
Hi mattyfez, I don't have any video or music file downloaded at the moment.
Chrome and MSN Bing both have the problem.
In the first instance, run Lenovo System Update. (You may need to grab it from their website first.) Install all the 'critical' software.
Also - how old is it and how long has it not been working? What's changed?

Have a look in your music folder, there's usually a couple of sample songs that if you click, should open with your default media player.. Does that work?
It is an i5 64 bit.Not sure how old it is .I had a new solid state hard drive installed after the original packed up and sound has not worked since, unless directed from a forum or whatever.
What if you have an MP3 or video file on your hard drive - do you get sound through whatever application is associated with them ?

Could well be a driver issue as mentioned above then, first thing to do is visit the lenovo site and install the latest driver package for your model of PC.
As cougar mentioned there's probably a tool on there you can use that will just update them all automatically.
Try that first and see how you get on.

Clean install of W7 then? Surely a driver issue. Chipset, soundcard or power management I'd wager. (I've had murders with Lenovo's PM drivers.)
(Leftfield idea, install W10...)

An X230 is pretty ancient - even older than my X131!

Definitely a driver issue - lots of drivers needed for a Lenovo on W7 to work well (though I think sound worked on mine with a clean W7 install before driver installation).
The theoretical issue with W10 is that it's probably not officially supported by Lenovo. However that's the case with mine and when I got a new hybrid drive (I like big HDs and didn't want to spend lots) I installed W10. After a few problems with things not working initially, it all works really well after some updates have come through. I installed some W8/W8.1 drivers, but there weren't drivers for everything, and Bluetooth still wasn't working - it seems that Windows updates fixed that. Not sure if I'm missing power management stuff, but TBH it all works fine.

...having just been using BT it seems worth mentioning that it's working better now than it ever did with W7, where it was always a bit flaky. General experience of W10 now after latest updates, it all just works.
I was a bit of a W10 sceptic, didn't see any need to upgrade from W7 and expected to have driver problems. Eventually my hand was forced because MS is stopping support for W7 and the latest SQL Server won't run on it, but honestly there don't seem to be any downsides, even on a Lenovo of similar age to the OPs, which supposedly doesn't support W10.
Anyway, the important point I wanted to make is that if you have a W7 key, then you can still activate a clean install of W10 with that - even OEM keys and Enterprise keys seem to work, even though they're not supposed to (hint: I have a couple of the latter, which should in theory work fine with multiple installations...)
