For golf ?
Very very bad luck for that spectator, but how the helm could you make golf spectating safer ?
Make them play it along the floor?
Tell the spectators there is a bar where you can see the actual action happening?
Shatter-proof safety specs?
Speed limits. Ban electric golf clubs.
I expect the rate of injuries in golf spectators is pretty low
When managing risk, personal protective equipment is the last resort if other measures are ineffective. The first thing to try is to eliminate the hazard, or if that doesn't work substitute it with something else... so er yeah, watch it in the bar, or go for a bike ride instead... 😏
Introducing blood will make the sport of walking and tapping a ball with a stick far more interesting.
Perhaps they could have teams with one team defending the hole, and we could make it less boring by making them stay in their buggies all the time and allowing them to hit each other with their golf racquets.
Just imagine the spectacle of an opposition golf buggy getting air over a bunker while its golfer leans out to swipe at the head of the sand shifter with a shout of "Fore!".
And of course the buggies would look like something out of Mad Max and have proper V8 engines.
To protect the spectators they should not be confined behind a barrier but instead be free range anywhere on the course. Points to be deducted for maiming one, so part of the tactics could be forcing your opposition's buggy into a spectator.
I don't know about you, but I have never seen the point of spectating in a sport. Participation makes it far more fun. Spectators could be part of the action by pushing a fellow spectator into the path of the buggy of the golfer team they didn't support (preferably, but not necessarily an opposition supporter).
Jeez, this is getting better every minute, but I'm sure the fine minds of STW could help refine the idea by coming up with other suggestions to make golf more interesting.
Blood sports always do well.
Change the ball material to soft sponge

Participation being fun doesn't make spectating not fun. Have you seen how crowds of people at sporting events seem to be enjoying themselves.
You are at that level watching the best in the world do their thing. Its impressive if that is your sport.
Change the ball material to soft sponge
And have a pack of spaniels loose on the course.
I don’t know about you, but I have never seen the point of spectating in a sport
Agree. I absolutely love cycling but find watching it pretty dull. Kierin on teh track is okay but that is about it.

Sad/ridiculous/typical thing is that now the spectator is planning legal action against the organisers.....!!!
As unfortunate as it is for this women & her vision loss, it's not exactly unexpected that a ball might go 'off piste' and you might be hit by it as a spectator.
It's impressive that it doesn't happen more often.
According to the Beeb website, one of the issues she is angry about is:
She says the marshals did not communicate that players were attempting to drive for the green instead of laying up on the fairway
I wonder if she has ever played golf, seen golf or understands golf in the slightest to make this statement. Why would the marshals presume to know what the golfer is about to do?
how the helm could you make golf spectating safer ?
riot shields.
tear gas optional.
She's certainly changed her attitude over the last few days. Presumably a lawyer got to her.
Spectators behind safety nets, players drop a shot if their ball hits the net, no injuries and still a penalty for a poor shot
She’s certainly changed her attitude over the last few days.[s] Presumably a lawyer got to her [/s] she received the first hospital bill and realised the treatment might go on for a while.
.... until she realised her health insurance only covered up to $10k for ocular bursting
I sympathize with her predicament and the decision to sue but do wonder about "blaming" the marshal. Is it not good enough from a claim point of view to say "dumb luck, unfortunate accident but this is why you've got PLI"
