Afternoon,
My air compressor is not working. The motor runs (as loud as always!) but the pressure doesn’t build. Maybe only gets 10psi. Is it scrap or fixable? Any advice appreciated,
Thanks
Chris

Is the vent stuck partially open?
Yep, checked the tank drain underneath?
Otherwise it's leaking on a joint or the piston is pooped.
Thanks both. Never messed with a compressor before. Where is the vent and drains located?
@sharkbait
Correction…found the drain valve earlier and it’s tight. Assume it should be right to maintain pressure?
You have been oiling it right?
And blowing it down periodically?
Think it's broken though.
Unless the prv has failed or the reed valve but most likely is piston and or rings.
Yes, it's a drain for condensation in the tank, so it's worth opening it up to see if there's water in there anyway.
Piston rings
If the drain is open you'll hear/feel the air coming out
I had this once, disconnect the hose and hey presto, must have been slowly leaking, lesson learnt...hope this helps...
On the other hand if it's never been drained and the tank's full of water, this may not have done it any good...
It's an oil free pump unit, so chances are the PTFE liners on the pistons are goosed and not allowing pressure to build.
If so, it's scrap.
There are a few checks to see if it is the reed valves on the head, unloader valve (that prevents the motor starting under load) or the pressure switch. If your not familiar with it though, you're as well binning it for what they cost.
Thanks all. Will have a tinker with it this afternoon but guessing it’s goosed. I inherited in and had a couple of years out of it so can’t complain.
Any recommendations for a replacement?
Screwfix - any good? https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb797cpr-24ltr-electric-oil-free-air-compressor-220-240v/976kv
Thanks
Use a small paint brush with soapy water on all the joints. If theres a leak on any of them you'll get bubbles.
@cjr61 If your last one handled what you needed to do with it ok, that one from Screwfix will be exactly the same.
As a rough guide, the pump unit wants to be running no more than 50% of the time you are using the compressor. If it is but is for only a few minutes it should be ok, but more than that and you risk wearing the internals out quickly.
All relative of course, as using it hard every day might get you six months out of it, whereas using it as a diy hobbyist hard, it will probably be good for 12 months+ - which for the money etc
Interesting, was going to post about mine, used it recently and could smell burning something coming from it. Was wondering if it needed some lube somewhere....
Must be 15 years old now, although only started using it again recently after several years of ignoring it.
Get yourself a used Jun-air from eBay. I use them at work and they are a million times better than noisy rattly landfill-waiting-to-happen Chinese rebanded crap.
Thanks all. Mine is definitely goosed so buying new one soon. Non-noisy does appeal!

What are you using it for might i inquire ? 🙂
I'm also looking for a compressor, which will only have the intended use of brad/staple and veneer pinner, no painting or other air hungry jobs required.
Screwfix has a 5ltr 0.5ph Senco model @£200 and although YT vids are few, what I have seen it's really quiet.

For nailing and the like they're pretty good, they couldn't provide any sort of continuous load - very portable and low noise - and its a sort of soft sound - some small compressors aren't so much loud as harsh / shrill.
I've got the PC1010 which I cut a few bits of the frame off so that it fits in a systainer along with a lightweight silicone air hose. I see they now sell a version where they've modified the frame for the same purpose.
Only caveat is Senco have been pretty crap for spares - I bust the pressure switch on mine and speaking to their UK distributor they seem to be pretty mystified by what parts their machines need and didnt seem to be able to match a part with the machine. So mines mothballed for time being until I've got time to pursue researching a fix.
