You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
As the season of home tinkering commences, I'm considering fitting composite or hardwood decking, to reduce the amount of maintenance required with 'normal' decking.
Anyone got any experience of either?
Interesting and timely for me too. We have the galvanized frame on the house, the deck is the next bit to sort...
does it have to be decking?
We've a mix of cheap decking and oak and whilst its durable it still needs cleaning / oiling both seem to need similar amounts of maintenance
if it needs to be raised how about using pavers on pedestals instead
something like this [ http://www.thedecktileco.co.uk/pedestals.php ]
We replaced our tired old basic decking with Yellow Balau, which is a good bit more expensive, but much nicer in every way. Very dense hardwood, seems to be much more resistant to damage and weathering. Neighbour had some basic pine stuff laid around the same time, and that's already looking shit. When you factor in the cost of paying for it to be laid etc, it's not all that more expensive overall.
Also, although smooth, ours isn't at all slippery when wet.. We haven't yet oiled it (recommendation was to leave it a year before doing so, as it's a naturally oily wood, and to let the colour get a little more subdued. All in all, it looks beautiful, friends/visitors comment on how nice it looks, and we're very happy with it.
Could you share some pics please?
Very interested in hard word decking, thanks
I used Ecodeck.co.uk for my decking. Solid composite of wood and resin meaning it can be worked and installed the same way as wood. Fades in sunlight (well everything does) but can be oiled if you want. Occasional pressure wash and it comes up sparkly clean. 25 year guarantee. Makes hardwood look cheap.
