dull as topic, but need to replace our backdoor as old wooden stable door which is is slowly rotting away and lets in all the draft.

don't want wood again for lack of maintenance and keeping drafts out. don't want UPVC for security reasons so looking at some form of composite door. however the quotes i'm getting back are c £1,800 for a stable door.

eighteen hundred pound - for a door....

any go to online places i've failed to find??

We’re going through the exact same thing. Quotes starting at £1650 for Endurance composite. Having been stung by a local door fitter previously we decided to try one of the bigger national brands. £3100. Genuinely thought he’d made a mistake and laughed him out the house. Exact same door (Solidor composite) using Timber Composite Doors £1900 fitted. They use Martindales as the fitter, who I’ve used previously so happy enough. Watch this space as it’s being fitted in June!

Sounds about right to me - especially for a split door. At the end of the day, you want low maintenance and higher security and that comes at a cost.

I have just looked and we paid £1,400 and £1,500 for back and front doors respectively back in 2015 so I think your price is very fair given the inflation in the last 8 years.

I used these guys last year - https://www.grpcompositedoors.com/

They delivered when they said they would, price was less than everywhere else and it went in OK. I can't comment on how long it will last but it seems fine so far.

Get a new stable door, but made out of hardwood?

Seems to be loads online, or call a few local chippies to quote.

And security - when was the last time your back door was banged in!?

a highly inflated one it would seem. i've got a double leaf insulated steel security door on my workshop which cost less than the quotes i'm getting - the materials in which i'd hazard a guess would cost more with far better locks. unfortunately sofagirl isn't that keen on on battleship grey doors more suitable for a secure unit as a main egress

Or Accoya, has life that equals or exceeds most hardwoods.

But it's not - I would say it is a pretty decent price. Unless you go for a uPVC, I doubt you'll get anything much cheaper than that.

We recently went through this process, in the end we went with https://www.we-do-doors.co.uk/.

They partner with local fitters. Had ours fitted a few weeks ago, guys did a great job and pleased with the door quality. Were cheaper than any other options too.

I have a composite front door. It is cold, poor insulator and was a right hassle to change the locks in.
Solid hardwood for me next time.no questions

I'm not trying to change your mind but how often does a door need painting? Our front door was fitted when the house was built in the 1960s and it has been stained once. It's due another coat to be fair.

Very happy with ours particularly in terms of insulation both thermal and accoustic.

It was a Solidoor, got it 3 years ago - £1,800 for the entire thing inc glass panel/frame/fitted.
