It's that time of year again when the once cheap Carbonite (CrashPlan) backup wants more money.

It hasn't auto renewed this year which means I might actually do something about changing it.

Does anyone have any other recommendations please for what to use? I want it to back up everything on a Windows computer with no fuss. If it involves sorting out my photos & awful filing system I won't get around to it.

I think Carbonite want $150 this year.... looking at something cheaper than that.

Cheers.

With the caveat that I don't use it on windows (but I believe it's supported) I've found Backblaze excellent and reasonably priced.

I'm using iDrive, works really well. (Despite the 'i' name, nothing to do with Apple).

It's 90% off at the moment for 1 year (makes it about $6)

Office365 is 80 squids a year for family membership of 1TB each

it just works with Windows, so it all appears on OneDrive even if it isn't all physically on your computer

you get Office apps as well

it's not a computer backup though, so it's not backing up your installed programs.  Only your data.  These days that tends to be enough as you download most programs using logins for their sites.  I almost never bother with full computer bare metal backups any more

@retro83 - tell us about the idrive pricing....are you normally able to get that kind of discount? or is the high price the real one so signing up now will lead to a big price jump next time around?

Yeah I use Backblaze too. Cheap enough, not had to call on it so far though (fortunately 😀)

You just get the first year cheap, it's normally $70/yr for 5tb.

The deal (if you are switching from someone else): https://www.idrive.com/idrive/signup/el/get90

If you're not switching then it's something like 30% off for the first year.

On onedrive - it's filesync, not backup. It's not incremental and one-way, and there's only limited versioning.

Just be aware of the limitations, and downsides of that vs. true backup.

Thanks, I do (mostly) understand the difference. I actually have a NAS drive doing back ups as well, OneDrive could do the job for the cloud side of it. I presume once I've set it up I'd just move all my folders in to the One Drive folder and that's it done? Can it deal with two hard drives?

I'll check out the other suggestions too thanks 🙂

I keep getting offers for idrive fro next to nothing, seems to work well although I’ve never had to do a restore.

Don’t forget to have at least one and preferable two local backups on separate drives as well and note a RAID NAS drive != a backup as such 🙂

Backblaze. Simple and effective.

Another vote for Backblaze. I also got the 12 month versioning thing so I don't get my data deleted if I'm away on a long trip.

Finally got around to sorting this. Just started BackBlaze off on the 15 day free trial.

I liked the idea of using OneDrive but we have one computer, 2 log ins - I assume we just move everything in to the onedrive folder?

The problem comes that all the photos are in a separate folder that we share - which I don't think OneDrive can deal with. Or can it? I suppose I could just move it into my OneDrive folder too.

I use Backblaze B2 and Arq as the back up agent - it’s solid. I pay about $4 a month for the folders I want backing up (about 1TB). Arq will back up to most cloud providers if you don’t want to use Backblaze, it’s encrypted, and versioned.

Not sure there is much point in complete computer cloud backup, in your case you could just do the C drive and then exclude a couple of system folders - no sorting really.

I just keep our photos in my OneDrive folder and share a link to that with the rest of the family. Works well and it is nicer browsing photos online than on the computer

This is probably what I’ll do. There’s only the two of us that need access.

C drive is only a small drive with Windows & programs on it.

All the important stuff is actually on 2 other drives.

Can I put the Documents, Pictures etc folders in the OneDrive folder and point W10 at it?

I’ll try later tonight if no one replies.

Even easier then, just have BackBlaze pick up those two drives and you’ll not need to sort/exclude anything.

I was responding to this in your OP: If it involves sorting out my photos & awful filing system I won’t get around to it. If you do want to move all your folders under a root OneDrive folder then just remember you can only sync to one root folder (AFAIK), so you couldn’t split your folders across two drives as OneDrive folders.

Once you’ve moved them, if you also want to point your Documents/Photos etc under the OneDrive folder you can. Just right click them and change the Location under Properties.

Depends what you want to 'backup'.
I don't need a full system image.

I use a mixture of old hard drives and free Google account. Mostly for documents as SSD drives are so quick to reinstall windows there's not point having a full system backup.

check out PCloud - They are doing £159 for 500gb's or £309 for 2TB - for life.

Yes you can or you can ask W10 to back-up certain local folders to OneDrive. You can also have your iDevice or Android phone automatically back up photos to a camera roll folder as well as iCloud or Google Drive.

Always have a full local back-up on either an external drive or NAS drive also :).

Right. I've decided to embrace OneDrive....

My user files are now on D: and wife's are on F:

I've moved a selection of folders (docs and pics) to the OneDrive folder to check it all works OK. If it does I'll pay for the Office / OneDrive subscription and move everything across. I presume I'll also have to nag my wife to sign up to a OneDrive account.

When that's all sorted I'll make a fresh backup on my NAS now that I've moved everything around so much.

Cheers for the help. This solution won as I can access everything anywhere and includes Office.
