Been working for a company for a very brief period. Knew from week 2 that it wasn't right (won't go into detail).

Met with line manager today to discuss things. We've never really exactly hit it off and I think he has had something against me from the start but not a problem as I had decided that if the meeting couldn't produce a positive result, that it was time for me to go.

I had my resignation letter ready. He was being his usual unhelpful self and I'd had enough of the conversation going nowhere so I said that if he wanted me off the team, that I would make life easy and resign - to which he didn't reply.

He then said he needed to make a call, came back and the first thing he said was that he was terminating my contract. I then gave him my resignation letter but he said he couldn't accept it as he had terminated the agreement first - I said that he should have accepted my offer to resign 5 mins prior.

He now says that he terminated the agreement.

The same outcome has been achieved so I'm not too bothered, but it occured that any file on me will now show that they terminated me, does this matter and if it does where do I stand - there was noone else present?

Not a big issue IMHO. Probably in your favour if you want to sign on.

It wasn't ITT Water & Wastewater in Rugby by any chance?

Did he give you the termination in writing or just verbally? I'm not sure that he could just do that. You should have given him your letter or if he wouldn't take it give it to HR.

Mind you if you've only been there 2 week it's probably just as easy to omit them from your CV. Lets face it from the sound of it you wouldn't get a reference worth having anyway.

Like you say, doesn't really matter to me, but he's an annoying sh1t who thinks he knows best. I know that Karma will sort him out in the long run - ironically, his new MD and I get on really well and she called me today for some 'advice' (I've got quite a bit of business experience and more than that role demanded). I explained that my time has ended but I would always be happy to help her where I can.

She asked for my opinion on him and I said I didn't feel it appropriate to comment today given what had happened this morning and that it might not be fair on him as I may give emotional replies as opposed to rational ones - she couldn't believe that I was being so professional and has asked if she can call me next week when the dust has settled!

The outcome of today has been the same, but I wnated to put him in his place and leave it from now on (really as he bullies other staff I wanted to 'realign' his opinion of himself).

Probably the best thing to do is to not even let it occupy my thoughts - water under the bridge now!

Broadly, first year in you can dismiss without reason. Having said that you had actually resigned - it doesn't have to be paper, my last one was email.

The guy's a bit of a plonker if he didn't spot that you were totally unsuitable for the job. You must be for him to dismiss you after 2 weeks. Either that or he's an arse 🙂

No, I've been there coming up 3 months, but knew things weren't right as of my 2nd week - I would be a bit concerned about my own ability if I'd been dismissed after 2 weeks 🙂

Fortunately I can be philosophical about it all as I have trail income from my own previous business , plus I have already been offered another job (I'm not rich by the way, just have quite large outgoings), but if it was someone who totally relied on that job, his underhand tactics could really knacker someone.

I'm leaving it to Karma, that sorts everything out in the end!

Maybe it's just the way you phrased things, but I suspect that his new MD has him sussed and you might like to make sure you don't burn that bridge just yet.
