So over about the last 18 month's my right ear has gone into ear wax production overdrive!! About every 8-12 weeks I find I feel a bit deaf in my right ear, and the following happens 😕

Edit-
I'm working on the pic!!

IMG_20171128_074434243

My left ear barely tans 1 cotton bud? I'm 36 now, so have to keep a check on nose and ear hair, so is this so other freaky aging thing? And why only one ear.

Is this, normal? Or is it what happens when the brain worm's escape into your ear?

Do you hold the phone to your right ear? I hold mine to my left and my left ear produces lots more wax.

Make an appointment to have your ears syringed at your local drop-in centre. It's an almost erotic experience as the warm water pulses into your ear and the results are always amazing, plus there's plenty of opportunity for smutty innuendo with the nurses. You will need to drip olive oil into your ears twice a day for a week to soften the wax before going.

Is this, normal?

What, trying to entice strangers on the internet to look at photos of your earwax?

No, that's not normal.

Can't see the pic (thank ****)

I thought the modern thinking was not to use cotton buds though? As they push the wax further down, and damage the hairs or something (which are the ear's natural way of getting rid of wax)?

I'm outdoors a lot, and do a little site work, so dusty'ish. But certainly equally dusty for both ears, so can't work out why my right one has gone rogue?

Interesting this.

My hearing doesn't seem as great as it should be - at least compared to my wife.  Also lately I've had more short bursts of tinnitis (lasting about 20 seconds) than I have had for many years.

Might be worth trying the olive oil thing?

I'm having the same thing but in my left ear...I got some stuff from America 2 years ago that's probably out of date but is brilliant for softening the wax up, you can hear it fizzing as it goes about it's business.

Yeah, seems some fizzy bicarb type stuff is probably the fix, was more intrigued as to just why one ear.

I have found this far more enjoyable than having to register with a gp and see them, thanks STW 😊

fizzy stuff worked for me.  never had any success with just oil

I wish i'd taken a photo of the lump the nurse pulled out my year last time i had them syringed.  It was enormous, then more black gunk came out after it.

A few years ago I was sitting in a bus station in Delhi - waiting for a bus to Manali, in the Himalayas, to go and pick up my motorcycle (long story).

Anyway, as those who've spent any time in India will know, there is no concept of personal space. The bloke sitting, squashed, next to me had one of those little wooden stirrers that you get for tea and coffee. He was playing about with it. Next thing I'm aware of - he's stuck it in my ear! I stayed perfectly still until he'd pulled it out. Turns out, he'd looked into my ear, seen a piece of earwax and, being a good citizen, decided to remove it for me.

He triumphantly brandished the little stick with a flourish and pointed to the earwax with a broad grin.

All I could really reply with was, "Thank you very much."

Do you sleep on your left?

Maybe the wax is draining out of your left ear at night, but staying in your right ear?

Some cracking vids on YouTube of earwax extractions. Dunno how people leave it so long before the realise a date size lump isn’t healthy.

Not read all the replies but do you give your ears a really good clean out in the bath or shower? If so that could be the problem.

For a fair few years I seemed to regularly get a blocked ear with one if not both feeling like they had a build up of wax deep inside. Prodding got some out but usually just made my hearing worse. Over the time I got a few ear infections (Maybe every other year?) until last September when it happened again. Long story short it turned in to a fungal infection and caused a lot of pain. Turns out I was over cleaning them, stopping my body using natural oils to get rid of the wax and was told to leave them alone. Have done since and they're miles better.

removing wax with earbuds isn't recommended.

I had radio therapy on my face - resulting in some pretty nasty burns around and in my ear. Skin fell off my ear in BIG lumps, the bits form the inside took a long time to come out - I sort of miss it.

We've already had an offer from a semi-professional fish rapist further up the thread, he should be able to do it.

Maybe he's sleeping on his right, and wax from his left ear is draining into the right one?

No.  Aside from the chance of damage, rummaging around in your earholes increases wax production.  (I think, anyway.)

In which case, someone wants to get a giant cotton bud and have a bit of a rummage round the STW web development office  😉
