Read somewhere that penny coins which say new penny on them from the 1970’s are worth much more than face value.
Surely they’re not that rare?

The metal in them is worth about 2p.

Even if it's gone up 10,000%, you're at a quid...

Anything is worth what someone will pay for it. Best of luck finding someone who’ll pay £250 for a penny.

Just checked my loose change. The first 1p I found was a 1971 new penny...

Or another one on Ebay, for £1. With 178 available, they can't be very rare. Seems to be plenty of other sellers for that sort of price.

Maybe it's money laundering.

I don't know why, but I'm really tempted to make an offer on that, for 1 penny.

Things come up like this on ebay. Someone gets the idea, others copy. It's a bit like when the new fiver came out and they were sticking them on ebay with sequential serial numbers, and no.s like AK47. It's just the turds floating about on the internet.

When copper prices were sky high 10 yrs ago the mint used to pull out old copper coins (as opposed to the copper coated nickel coins of later years/ now) and recycle them. The intrinsic value of the material was more than the 'face' value.

I doubt they bother these days

Some Victorian pennies are worth "a bit" due to being minted in a relatively small quantity at a different mint. They have a miniscule "H" marked on them. Rarity is everything.

I've found many hundreds of Victorian pennies whilst metal detecting over the years but never one of the rare ones.

There is rare and there is rare though.

A tiny Roman coin (made of bronze, not gold or anything) was found by a detectorist and valued at £100,000 as it is only the second one in existence and proved the existence of a previously unknown Roman Emperor. Well, pretender to the throne anyway.

I'm rich, I'm rich!

I have a pot of 1ps and 2ps, which I've never got round to turning into useful cash or anything. Weighs about 2kg, hundreds of them, 20 years worth possibly. Picked 20 pennies out from the top layer. 3 are seventies New Pence. Based on that extremely scientific test, I'm loaded by the time I factor it up to 15% of the whole pot.
