So my Bro in law has asked for a bottle of Cognac, as it’s become a bit of a tradition at xmas.

Fancy mixing things up and maybe getting some Armagnac or Calvados for him instead, as they seem better value.

Personally I love Calvados but have never tried Armagnac. Should I just get him the Cognac or is there a better alternative ?

Calvados!

I used to live in the region, so am more than a little bit biased!

I love Armagnac - I think it offers more 'bang' for your buck than Cognac, which can tend to suffer from the 'premium' spirit perception. I find it a big less intense, more rounded, but obvs that depends which one you go for.

Only ever had rough Calvados so can't suggest anything there!

Metaxa; if you go seven or twelve star it's as good as cognacs five times the price.

My experience of Calvados is it's a bit marmite, so it might be a bit of a gamble unless you know he definitely likes it. I usually buy Armagnac because you tend to get more for your money as said above (more as in quality).

It's worth looking at Spanish brandy: Carlos I is lovely stuff.

IHN has it - 12 star metaxa, like alcoholic honey poured down your throat by angels. Almost.

I'd go for armagnac as it's less of a departure and yes bang for buck. Metaxa isn't a bad shout

Thanks all, looks like it’ll be Armagnac FTW

Armagnac is indeed lovely, but I have a thing for Asbach Uralt (my 50% German heritage sowing there).

Get some Pineau, it really is the best!

One more for your consideration.

In reply to your question if he only likes 'Brandy' then get him the cognac but if he likes Brandy get him something a bit different.

I'd like to second a decent metaxa as an option, served in a warmed brandy balloon it's just delicious.

It's much closer to port than brandy though.

Went for the Metaxa 12 stars in the end, be interesting to see if the Bro-in-law likes it.
