Anybody got one of these gadgets?

Only drinking Americano type coffee, the need for frothing milk is not one that I have so thinking of something simpler than the all singing dancing bean to cup type machines.

If you want a great filter coffee machine I think the Sage is the answer. It doesn't have a built in grinder though, I can't think of any that do really.

For coffee nerd clarity, americano is an espresso with water added, a percolator will drop water through the beans and the filtered end product is your drink.

So it depends what you really want.

I should say, I have an aeropress that makes great coffee for a reasonable price. I also have a manual espresso press that makes lovely coffee for a less reasonable price, but most of the money went on grinders.

I have an aeropress but there’s too much faffage involved in operating and cleaning it so it doesn’t get used.

I was looking at the melitta 1021-12 filter coffee machine with grinder that’s around £100 not really looking to spend masses more but equally if the low faff option is more pricey then I will have a look; no point buying a cheaper item and then not using it.

For coffee nerdage... That's a filter machine not a percolator.

A percolator recirculates the water through the grounds.

I never understand when people say aeropress is faff. It's the least faffy method I can think of! A rinse occasionally is all that's needed.

Agreed the aeropress is close to if not easier than the faff keeping a Jura clean...... We have both both get roughly equal use dependant on what we want from the drink.

For strong black coffee I use a stove top, bialetti are only c 25 quid, and a knock grinder. For something a bit nicer the Alessi stove tops are really nice, about 50 quid.

It's like you read the OP poolman then answered the opposite question.

Ah, joshvegas, but he's gone back to the original need (black coffee) and suggested an alternate solution, rather than going with the solution assumed by the OP.
(this is too much like talking to customers at work)
And in that spirit, I've got a Sage Bambino and a separate grinder. Neither of which meet your request but they do make excellent black coffee.

This reviews filter machines: https://coffeeblog.co.uk/best-filter-coffee-machines/

And the one bean to cup one it features is this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Melitta-Filter-Machine-AROMAFRESH-1021-05/dp/B099ZRWBZX?pd_rd_w=GUqr7&content-id=amzn1.sym.86cf4ef2-563d-461f-a769-0c8a9148359e&pf_rd_p=86cf4ef2-563d-461f-a769-0c8a9148359e&pf_rd_r=95103HPEHKS8SKMXY658&pd_rd_wg=izLee&pd_rd_r=8b4a0dd9-7a25-4fe7-acd2-5f919b565365&pd_rd_i=B099ZRWBZX&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=coffeeblogcou-21&linkId=fe7c2b5cc194d4bbc25bfba1f6e21f41&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl

I also read "percolator" and thought of those terrible 60s things that reboiled the coffee until it was basically carbon. No wonder my parents were slow to switch from instant, such a faff for a not very nice drink. People didn't know better back then.

Aeropress is the easiest and quickest for us. It gets a v brief rinse immediately after use and then stands beside the sink for next time. We have a metal filter. The only minor issue is splitting the coffee between two mugs, I always dribble a bit pouring between them. You could be posh and use a jug but that's more washing up and cools the coffee unless you warm it which is even more hassle.

Cafetières are almost as good.

Wouldn't use bean to cup as we sometimes vary the beans a bit from one cup to the next (eg decaf when we want more coffees).

Another Aeropress user here. Bean to cup machines are more faff keeping them clean and working well. If you want something easier then get a pod machine.

I have the Melitta one, with an insulated pot (?carafe) and it is spot on for my filter needs (as I get wired on espressos). Detachable water tank, burr grinder (mildly adjustable) and a timer.
Harts have it at a great price - I’m almost thinking of buying a spare -

Also have an aeropress for the single cup moments or when I run out of filters.

My mum has this, possibly the previous model. It works well and sounds like it fits what you want

Turns out I was wrong (not for the first time), that Melita looks decent, Amazon don't detail the burr type and size annoyingly though.

I also meant to put percolator in quoted as I was just using the OPs term, assuming drip filter was what we were talking about.

I also read it as drip filter.

But standards must be kept.

Percolators are great on a campfire.

As for me...

Spong no2 grinder screwed to the wall
Aeropress/bialletti as desired.

Have a Gaggia Classic espresso machine (semi-manual) and a separate Cuisinart electric burr grinder. Means I can faff when I want to, but still occasionally buy pre-ground for convenience.

Makes the best espressos I’ve ever had….much better than the stove tops and I just add hot water to make an Americano, should I feel the need. Has a frother too….just enjoyed a flat white which again was better than I can buy from a shop.

Also doesn’t take up too much space which is a requirement. Some machines are mahoosive!

Aeropress user here. Had it for absolutely years, although I did replace the bung as it was getting a bit worn. I rate it as the least faff of all the real coffee approaches. Also have a Go for in the van

Personally I only use it for me, if it's 2 or more cups then I usually use a cafetiere

@thecaptain - can you not just move the aeropress between both mugs? Rather than fill one and pour some into the other?

I had the same one as drlex but the mrs didn’t like it so we went back to our previous mellita look therm which we’ve had for a few years and bought a new jug for it.

inthink the ideal thing is a decent machine sage is great but spends melitta is cheaper and still decent and get a separate grinder.

filrer coffee has more caffeine in that espresso though IIRC so you might be better with an aeropress which is very easy to use.

Possibly @benp1 but it's not always easy to judge the half-way point, plus the favour profile varies slightly through the plunge and the crema is all at the end. And some of our mugs are too tight for the aeropress. It's a complex issue 🙂

The need for bad black coffee?

thanks all! I must confess that whilst I’m a coffee drinker. I’m not a connoisseur. Mrs MJ is the one who stopped using the aeropress. Sounds like I need to find out why it was deemed to much faff. possibly the two cup issue. Or It might be that the faff is at the time of each cup (her) whereas a machine is a separate cleaning faff (me!)

@sui how do you find the faff and propensity for mess with the melitta?

@muddyjames

no faff at all, chuck a filter in the removal pot, water in the tank and press go. I only ever rinse the removal pot and jug with warm water, that's it. It gets a thorough clean after about 60 brews. I have an aeropress as well and use that when it's just me (i use the melitta to grind the beans for me ito a cup), but when it's missus and I or + extended family then use the Melitta in full swing. It's nice to set it up night before on the timer with the beans in the hopper, water, strenght and grind set and wake up to fresh coffee.
