Only a month after it tried its hand at welding with the alternator, my volvo v50 has developed a taste for dot 4. The culprit is the concentric slave cylinder, which along with the leak now has a rumbly release bearing so it clearly needs to be changed.

I do most jobs on my cars, but never taken a gearbox off a transverse engine, and to be honest would rather not have to.

The part can be had for about £50, but any ideas on the likely cost of the labour?

Pointless doing all that work and not changing the clutch at the same time so factor that into the cost.
4-6 hours labour so £500 inc parts.

I'd go with clutch + and extra hour and parts.

So about £500 for everything at Mr Clutch (plus "your CV joint/water pump/gearbox output bearings/gearbox seal need doing) or £750 at an independent.

I feel your pain, I've had to get the spigot bush out of an mg midget (bonnet off, radiator out, exhaust manifold off, carbs/intake off, engine out. And back in again. All to replace a 50p bit of brass!

An MG I think I'd have a go myself, it's the super close packaging of the engine bay on this that puts me off.

The car is on 191k, and I've decided that I want to get it to 200k before it's allowed to die. The rest of the clutch feels fine, so I'm tempted to just replace the broken bit for now.

If you do it you probably get the release bearing as part of the clutch kit anyway, even if it's a separate item by the time you get to the bearing you're at the clutch anyway. For and extra £70 or so you may as well replace the whole lot, it's probably only another 6-8 Allen head screws at that point!

I looked at it for my focus and the packaging didn't seem too bad. Once the engine is braced you sort of get at it all from the wheel arch. Obviously varies by car but I didn't think it looked as bad as the mg which was possibly more obvious but did involve pretty much everything forward of the prop shaft being strewn across the garage floor.
