A few tips from a bona fide fashion guru:

y fronts        yes - gotta support the boys

corduroy      dubious but possible depending on situation

tank tops    Under no circumstances

duffel coat  Under no circumstances

st Anthony parker  WTF is that and a parka?  Unless you are in the Yukon or the 1970s then no

green flash  Only if a youth otherwise its trying to capture your long lost youth

plaid  Are you canadian or american?

Turn ups  Yes

monkey boots  no

turtle not v neck  Both are acceptable

no tartan  but you said plaid is OK?  Plaid is tartan

No Three quarter length  3/4 length what?  trousers?   Deffo none of them

loose not straight  referring to what?

cotton  yes

Nice leather belt  only for fat bastards

no hats  Really?  a pork pie, fedora, trilby, panama all acceptable in the right circumstances.  Beanies only on the hills

no shorts unless hot or cycling  OK

jumpers – under appreciated  indeed.  I have a fine range

Monty was in uniform and the coat a part of that.  I had to wear elastic waist trousers as a part of my work supplied uniform.  ~That doesn't mean its acceptable to wear them outside of work

What is wrong with a good Duffel Coat?A lot more stylish than the usual ribbed binbag. A lot less pretentious than a smoking jacket as well.

St Michael (shudders at mum bought items of clothing)

Lord Anthony was the snorkel parka, I had a nice navy one in primary school before upgrading to a Campari ‘ski’ jacket.

People that are genuinely stylish, don't give a **** what other people think about the clothes they wear.

Anyone that makes rules up like those above...**** 'em.

Edit: wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

Now, this is a bloody good Parka (if I do say so myself) - as seen worn by Mr Pegg, as every other pic on the internet was a webp file rather than jpeg

Hi.

I need some new work clothes. And advice about being smarter.

I'm a chinos, moleskin, cotton jeans, with nice Oxford or similar shirt, jumper on winter type dresser. Nice pair of either waxed boots or smart casual trainers on occasion. I like colours, not grey.

I'm needing more of the same decent quality, without spending silly money or looking like my only shop is Next. Where?

I'm also needing slightly smarter. I'm not thinking a full on suit. But promised myself a nice Harris tweed jacket perhaps, maybe a nicer pair of trousers and shirt, maybe a pair of 'best' shoes or boots. Again, suggest where or even what is smart but not full suit.

edit: and I need a smarter winter coat than Berghaus GoreTex or staff fleece...

49.9 year old, 6'1", 14st and 'sturdily' built, long leg and size 9.5 shoes of Dunblane.

@TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTR

I’m always tempted yet bewildered by the vast range of Engelbert Strauss

However, your vintage recommendation looks appealing

(For reference, I mostly wear Revolution Race trousers which are softshell and hard wearing and super stretchy material, great for commuting and gardening, and can sometimes just about get away with in smarter settings)

Having purchased two, you clearly like them, which is a ringing endorsement in itself, are you able to confirm whether your Engelbert Strauss Vintage trousers are comfy and crucially stretchy?

Reading their website blurb they state “extremely comfortable… elastic canvas… Enormous elasticity in all directions” which all sounds promising, and they offer free delivery and free returns

.

.

And @matt_outandabout

I have just ordered a pair of William Lennon safety boots which you may wish to add to your shortlist for your next boots purchase

https://williamlennon.co.uk/shop/108-safety-all-terrain-boot/

I went for a custom one off bright colour way, with customised grain and details, handmade in England, and change from £140 delivered

The drawback, I have to wait 5 months from placing the order, as everything is handmade by a small team

Yes, they have some good stretch in them and really comfy - they do have superflous knee pad pockets (if you don't need them), but they don't look obvious and could just be part of the 'styling'. They are quite slim fitting though. I'll try and get a pic later

I still have a soft spot for extra pockets on my trousers (ie cheap tkmaxx jeans) harking back to my primary school days...  Four decades  later.

For non-pilots I'm sure a shin pocket is  ever used

What can you put in there? Anything more than a piece of paper will annoy you whilst walking

You need to distinguish between style and fashion. Keeping up with fashion and you'll look like a tryhard dadlad. Style on the mature man means always wearing at least one quality/classic item of clothing. My favourites: Magee for tweed, Northampton for shoes, Union Clothing in Newcastle when I'm up there. The rest of it, cheap and cheerful, Ebay, re'cycled etc.

Velvet jackets do seem to be making a bit of a comeback - quite a few being worn at the last couple of dinners I have been too - neither were super formal though.

Regarding style - do people (on here) feel like they have their own particular 'style' - and that doesn't mean they are necessarilly 'stylish' or have a unique style - more that they have adopted a certain style or look that they conform to most days?

To a certain extent I tend to predominantly dress more towards the look I posted a page back, but then another time I'll be in white trainers, black skinny jeans, white tee and North Face gilet for example - a completely different 'look'. I guess some people tend to dress the same 99% of the time - I certainly know people that do

Like MattOAB my work style is chinos/oxford button down-casual, or door-to-door Mormon as my wife calls it....So that's cool. Other than that I'm a white dude in my fifties, I'm effectually invisible, so it doesn't matter what I wear.

Please everyone, keep this thread going, it’s by far my favourite.

I suppose I should contribute to help the discussion, so here goes. I like:

Carpenter trousers, especially carhartt. They have extra pockets without being too cargo.

Henley shirts

Grandad shirts

Keen Jasper shoes. Soooo comfy and versatile

3/4 length trousers. There, I said it.

To complement the different 'look' match each change of outfit with a massive mood swing. Keeps people on their toes.

Can we make dungarees with a pocket on the chest fashionable?

I remember having a Lord Anthony parka, I vaguely remember that the pockets ended up terribly sticky with the remnants of space dust from discarded packets and it had to go.

I’m not sure that age has anything to do with what you should wear, the issues more around the fit and especially around the beer gut.

I also think your fashion taste also come from the time you grow up so you have to be a little adventurous and try new things on as it’s easy to stay in a fashion time warp.

Just remember it’s better to age disgracefully 🙂

There are certain things you wear when younger that would look a bit daft on a 50+ guy

But I don't get the 'older guys shouldn't wear jeans' mantra

Right.. Today's shopping on a p*ss wet day.

Some nice shirts from M&S and TK Max. Tick.

A nice pair of smart 5-pocket trousers, a pair of chinos and a slightly smarter trousers? What a faffage.

Some 34" waists if fitted nicely. But the legs didn't like my cyclist thighs or too tight in the front crotch.

The 34" waists that were too tight fitted nicely on my thigh and calf. But uncomfortably tight on the waist.

So I tried 36" waist - too loose on the waist for most. And baggy around the front crotch.

Tried to go to a slim cut 36" waist - butt and crotch fitted nicely. Thighs and calf were then too tight.
