or "The Status Quo" ?
Uncle Jezza - I can just see you in this and double (stonewashed) denim

As for band T-shirts... another over 50's saddo here, I'm afraid. I've presently got this St Etienne on, because I love the band, but I also love their 60s-inspired design work and particularly this sort of typography

Colour plays its part. Getting on and you start migrating towards the browns and khaki.

The same could be said of clothing choices.
One thing that seems to be common is a lot of poeple wear what they like and don't care what other people think, yet also have some opinions about what is acceptable / not acceptab;le for other people to wear. I'm not really sure how that stacks up.
I can't see what the fuss is about. Its all academic anyway. As a bloke of a certain age, you're effectively invisible unless you were wearing a fluro orange tutu and an elaborate tiara, so wear what you like*
*maybe a slightly less elaborate tiara?
Fred Perry and ox blood DM's. Just copy me I am super cool.
Dress like an Italian. Navy blue and white. Brown shoes and belt. Slim but not too tight.
As mentioned earlier - watch Stanly Tucci in Italy and just copy that.
I'm not sure that dressing like Stanly Tucci in Italy, while certainly very stylish while sat outside a cafe in Sardinia, is massively practical in somewhere where it rains 340 days a year. Theres a reason you don't see many blokes sporting cream linen trousers in Burnley 😉

Maybe a bit more like Stanley Matthews?

There is, but it's bog all to do with the weather. If by some miracle you manage to last the night without getting your head kicked in, it'll be absolute murder the next morning getting the chilli sauce stains out.
TJ, wear whatever you want.

Currently updating my wardrobe and STiI is definitely in the mix of inspiration. If only for summer.
@tjagain (and others) you might find this interesting as regards how you perceive yourself and others, and how you think others might perceive you
I think I look a bit of a babe magnet in my Pounland denim shorts.
Plausible.

^ More hair.
Trolly dash through M&S. You can p stock up on cardigans and chino’s galore.
...and Blue Harbour for the holibobs
What is a bit sad is seeing people a lot younger than me wearing band tee shirts that they could never, ever, possibly have seen, like Led Zeppelin, Nirvana or Ramones, that have come from Burton’s or Urban Outfitters or some high street retailer.
Sorry, just catching up so going back a bit, but how have you got time to be sad?
You must be well busy balancing all that skateboarding with your military career. Which I'm presuming is correct as you wear skate brands and army stuff? Or are there different rules about wearing things you like for you and other people?
Has he bought any new clothes yet?
Thread resurrection: I want a casual summer jacket. I don't want a denim jacket (I looked awkward in them in my 20s). Most of my clothes are outdoor clothes, I live in fleeces most of the year so something that is casual is required.
So what is the light summer jacket of choice nowadays for those days when it's not peeing down with force 10 winds but a shirt or t-shirt isn't enough to keep you warm on the way to the pub?
Jon Richardson stylee cardigan, ovs.
I really like this, the material is nice (thinks it’s the same as the cargo pants). I’ve fairly recently invested in a navy lightweight jacket (Paul Smith sales), otherwise I’d likely have invested in one.
Has he bought any new clothes yet?
I ended up not buying much at all and remaining rather dull much of the time.
A jumper?
that's chunky overshirt territory, IMO:
https://formandthread.com/products/mechanics-overshirt?color=Soft+Black#image-1
a jumper won't cut it - we live on a windy hill in West Yorkshire
a beer coat only adds a few deg C so I need a real coat
Tough brief. You want a windproof but pub friendly summer jacket. So techy, but not techy. Stealth tech. This sounds like Howies territory.
Or a Guernsey jumper? They repel water and are tight knitted enough for pub-distance windy walks.
2nd for the STW favourite HebTroCo; they do a range of nice lightweight, yet useful jackets in a variety of material and colour
My nearest pub is 10 mins walk but the beer isn't great. My "local" is 25mins walk away.
That mechanic jacket looks okay - I guess it's basically a denim jacket but avoids the dreaded curse of double denim.
Local terrain for local people

I'd agree with this, though the one linked has an odd-shaped cut to my eye.
Also, the word "overshirt" seems to get used for a lot of what I'd just call "shirts" these days.
I have a nice quilted Finisterre one which is actually jacket territory. But like that Hebtroco one it's cut a little shorter than I'd ideally like.
Take my advice under caution though. I actually do wear a jacket like Crocket's in the Miami Vice link above (but blue).
Also, the word “overshirt” seems to get used for a lot of what I’d just call “shirts” these days.
Yeah I've got a few, ranging from fairly lightweight cotton, all the way up to a Melton wool one that weighs a ton. Can be tricky to tell online how thick the material is.
Uniqlo do some half decent overshirts
Also, the word “overshirt” seems to get used for a lot of what I’d just call “shirts” these days.
Nah, whilst they come from the same 'family' I'd say there is a distinct difference between the two such as:
- Usually a thicker/heavier material so it can act as a jacket (shacket)
- Cut a bit bigger to allow layering underneath
- Cut square at the bottom, not intended to be tucked in
- More pockets (often 2 x chest pockets and possibly hip / hand warmer pockets)
I can see how this may get confused with a thicker flannel shirt, but if your flannel has the above traits it's probably an overshirt.
So what is the light summer jacket of choice nowadays for those days when it’s not peeing down with force 10 winds but a shirt or t-shirt isn’t enough to keep you warm on the way to the pub?
.
My choice is a Rivelo Stormfleece jacket from SportPursuit. It doesn't look "bikey", it's just warm enough to take off a wind chill and, DWRed, it'll ward off a shower.
Good info cheers Razoo.
I still feel some retailers stretch the definition a little, which makes searching for the type I'm after tricky.
I knew that there would be one 😉👍🤣
And I'll keep wearing it until I don't look as good as a young Don Johnson in it
😛
@razorrazoo - are you allowed to tuck the overshirt into your underpants like your Granny taught you?
@razorrazoo – are you allowed to tuck the overshirt into your underpants like your Granny taught you?
Only if you pop your trouser bottoms into your socks too.
Private White VC do some nice Ventile cotton shackets. Spendy mind. Got mine heavily discounted in a sale and I pretty much live in it.
Or a new brand I heard of recently Neem do some nice ones. All sustainable if you're into that sort of thing. I bought a pop over shirt and it's good quality and hits the smart/casual dad wear brief nicely.
£55 gets you this jacket that looks like a grown up non-bikey jacket... it's got buttons (hiding a zip) and a proper collar.
However, it's actually a softshell jacket in disguise. Someone used the term 'stealth-tech' earlier , thats what this is.
I had better confess. I am about to pull the trigger on the purchase of a smoking jacket. I cannot decide between the purple velvet and the golden paisley pattern with quilted red lapels tho
Pub jacket for summer you say.
TJ - you're very much a purple man so...go for it.
I take it you already have the essential cravats?
You should check out House of Bruar.
I think we need to see the 2 options before you purchase TJ
Of course I have cravats! what sort of a man do you think I am?

One thing that seems to be common is a lot of poeple wear what they like and don’t care what other people think, yet also have some opinions about what is acceptable / not acceptable for other people to wear. I’m not really sure how that stacks up.
I absolutely wear whatever the hell I want, I don’t care what anyone else thinks, and I care even less what anyone else wears.
I see people half my age wearing matching jackets with wolves woven into the design, or dream catchers or whatever, I just do a virtual eye-roll; it’s none of my business how they dress, anymore than it’s theirs how I dress.
I have a blue Carhartt twill jacket that I wear for cooler days off the bike. Not the heavy blanket lined version. Just twill. Very comfy and holds rain off a bit too.
@tjagain you’re thinking about a smoking jacket when you’ve quit smoking?🤡
I have a blue Carhartt twill jacket
I think I have a gap in my wardrobe for something like this. I love my Carhartt twill trews.
Twill is a funny word, isn't it?
vestes coltins bourgerons bleus de travail occasion blue work jackets (free.fr) ...Google that for some proper workwear jackets. 'Twill' is a bit officer's mess, I think they are duck.
How does a nearly 60 man with a shaved head avoid looking like a thug?
I was at a gig and half the audience had shaved heads, cargo shorts , a band t shirt and white trainers.
That was me apart from the white trainers which I would never own.
It was like a question time reunion.
Style tips to make me look like a caring, lefty ,remainer please.
zippy - a cardigan?
Tank top and Loon pants. 👍
Hmmm so what’s the point of a smoking jacket, is it to stop the eau da ashtray from your other clothes ?
and wasn’t that what dr who used to wear 🙂
I think tj would look nicer in a denim jacket.
With a denim shirt and some nice jeans
I've got a couple of different pairs of Kuhl trousers that fit (me) really nicely when I want a change from jeans
The Kuhl Burr jacket is a new favourite too
Also just bought some Englebert Strauss work trousers (ES Vintage range) with the flappy (holster?) pockets. I like them that much I've just ordered a couple of pairs sans flappy pockets to wear when not at work
How are you getting on with the &SONS stuff you bought?

Love it, especially the shirts. Pictured here with a pair of £30 Vinted 501's

A dreadlock wig?

I was wondering that. Looks like the shiny lapels might be easier to brush fallen ash off?
And yeah maybe protecting your other finery. (Or pyjamas, as it does look a bit like a dressing gown?)
Keeping warm if you've got the windows open to give you a bit of fresher air?
TJ is the 13th Duke of Wyboure and I claim my $5.00

Well, thank God, at last a proper expert has joined the discussion!
I would be using the ~"smoking jacket" as a dressing gown. Wiki has a page on the derivation of them but IIRC basically it was a less formal jacket to put on when you withdrew from the dining room to smoke with the men - perhaps so you didn't damage your formal jacket. It also perhaps was one of the antecedents of the "dinner jacket" which is less formal than a tailcoat
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_jacket
no shorts unless hot or cycling
But who decides whether I'm hot or not?
There used to be a website for it, but I don't trust you lot to give me a straight answer.
But these only become popular as everything else that everyone wore in ye olde times was ever so very formal, starched, irons and stiff. It was probs a blessed relief to shrug off a justacorps or doublet or whatever and put on something that had no 'structure' to it.
These days smoking jacket conjures up a bit...
