Uncle Jezza - I can just see you in this and double (stonewashed) denim

As for band T-shirts... another over 50's saddo here, I'm afraid. I've presently got this St Etienne on, because I love the band, but I also love their 60s-inspired design work and particularly this sort of typography

Colour plays its part. Getting on and you start migrating towards the browns and khaki.

The same could be said of clothing choices.

I can't see what the fuss is about. Its all academic anyway. As a bloke of a certain age, you're effectively invisible unless you were wearing a fluro orange tutu and an elaborate tiara, so wear what you like*

*maybe a slightly less elaborate tiara?

Dress like an Italian. Navy blue and white. Brown shoes and belt. Slim but not too tight.

As mentioned earlier - watch Stanly Tucci in Italy and just copy that.

I'm not sure that dressing like Stanly Tucci in Italy, while certainly very stylish while sat outside a cafe in Sardinia, is massively practical in somewhere where it rains 340 days a year. Theres a reason you don't see many blokes sporting cream linen trousers in Burnley 😉

Maybe a bit more like Stanley Matthews?

There is, but it's bog all to do with the weather. If by some miracle you manage to last the night without getting your head kicked in, it'll be absolute murder the next morning getting the chilli sauce stains out.

What is a bit sad is seeing people a lot younger than me wearing band tee shirts that they could never, ever, possibly have seen, like Led Zeppelin, Nirvana or Ramones, that have come from Burton’s or Urban Outfitters or some high street retailer.

Sorry, just catching up so going back a bit, but how have you got time to be sad?

You must be well busy balancing all that skateboarding with your military career. Which I'm presuming is correct as you wear skate brands and army stuff? Or are there different rules about wearing things you like for you and other people?

Thread resurrection: I want a casual summer jacket. I don't want a denim jacket (I looked awkward in them in my 20s). Most of my clothes are outdoor clothes, I live in fleeces most of the year so something that is casual is required.

So what is the light summer jacket of choice nowadays for those days when it's not peeing down with force 10 winds but a shirt or t-shirt isn't enough to keep you warm on the way to the pub?

Hebtroco Railway Jacket

I really like this, the material is nice (thinks it’s the same as the cargo pants).  I’ve fairly recently invested in a navy lightweight jacket (Paul Smith sales), otherwise I’d likely have invested in one.

Tough brief. You want a windproof but pub friendly summer jacket. So techy, but not techy. Stealth tech.  This sounds like Howies territory.

Or a Guernsey jumper? They repel water and are tight knitted enough for pub-distance windy walks.

My nearest pub is 10 mins walk but the beer isn't great. My "local" is 25mins walk away.

That mechanic jacket looks okay - I guess it's basically a denim jacket but avoids the dreaded curse of double denim.

I'd agree with this, though the one linked has an odd-shaped cut to my eye.

Also, the word "overshirt" seems to get used for a lot of what I'd just call "shirts" these days.

I have a nice quilted Finisterre one which is actually jacket territory. But like that Hebtroco one it's cut a little shorter than I'd ideally like.

Take my advice under caution though. I actually do wear a jacket like Crocket's in the Miami Vice link above (but blue).

Yeah I've got a few, ranging from fairly lightweight cotton, all the way up to a Melton wool one that weighs a ton.  Can be tricky to tell online how thick the material is.

Nah, whilst they come from the same 'family' I'd say there is a distinct difference between the two such as:

- Usually a thicker/heavier material so it can act as a jacket (shacket)

- Cut a bit bigger to allow layering underneath

- Cut square at the bottom, not intended to be tucked in

- More pockets (often 2 x chest pockets and possibly hip / hand warmer pockets)

I can see how this may get confused with a thicker flannel shirt, but if your flannel has the above traits it's probably an overshirt.

.

My choice is a Rivelo Stormfleece jacket from SportPursuit. It doesn't look "bikey", it's just warm enough to take off a wind chill and, DWRed, it'll ward off a shower.

Private White VC do some nice Ventile cotton shackets. Spendy mind. Got mine heavily discounted in a sale and I pretty much live in it.

Or a new brand I heard of recently Neem do some nice ones. All sustainable if you're into that sort of thing. I bought a pop over shirt and it's good quality and hits the smart/casual dad wear brief nicely.

£55 gets you this jacket that looks like a grown up non-bikey jacket... it's got buttons (hiding a zip) and a proper collar.

However, it's actually a softshell jacket in disguise.   Someone used the term 'stealth-tech' earlier , thats what this is.

I absolutely wear whatever the hell I want, I don’t care what anyone else thinks, and I care even less what anyone else wears.

I see people half my age wearing matching jackets with wolves woven into the design, or dream catchers or whatever, I just do a virtual eye-roll; it’s none of my business how they dress, anymore than it’s theirs how I dress.

I've got a couple of different pairs of Kuhl trousers that fit (me) really nicely when I want a change from jeans

The Kuhl Burr jacket is a new favourite too

Also just bought some Englebert Strauss work trousers (ES Vintage range) with the flappy (holster?) pockets. I like them that much I've just ordered a couple of pairs sans flappy pockets to wear when not at work

I was wondering that. Looks like the shiny lapels might be easier to brush fallen ash off?

And yeah maybe protecting your other finery. (Or pyjamas, as it does look a bit like a dressing gown?)

Keeping warm if you've got the windows open to give you a bit of fresher air?

I would be using the ~"smoking jacket" as a dressing gown.  Wiki has a page on the derivation of them but IIRC basically it was a less formal jacket to put on when you withdrew from the dining room to smoke with the men - perhaps so you didn't damage your formal jacket.  It also perhaps was one of the antecedents of the "dinner jacket" which is less formal than a tailcoat

But these only become popular as everything else that everyone wore in ye olde times was ever so very formal, starched, irons and stiff. It was probs a blessed relief to shrug off a justacorps or doublet or whatever and put on something that had no 'structure' to it.

These days smoking jacket conjures up a bit...
