We have an oak front door that has been treated with linseed oil at some point in its past. However now it is black and filthy from the weather and muck/dust from the road.
How do I get it clean?
What do I treat it with to avoid it happening again?
I was going to give it a blast with a jet washer to see if that shifted anything as the first step, but there is no point in cleaning it if I’m not going to protect it with something afterwards.
the "black" is often the fungus within wood itself.
It's almost impossible to remove.
I'd give it a scrub with a water and a brush, allow to dry properly. Then treat with Sikkens HLS and filter 7. But it will change the colour of your door.
Never tried it but oxalic acid is supposed to get the black off.....
The blackening is only at the most exposed areas. Where there is an overhang to protect it from the weather, or on the sheltered side of the house it is relatively stain free. Will give the acid a go.
Thanks.
