I'm seeing loads of car ads which are clearly scams with the term Clean Title!!! in the description.
I understand that this is a US thing and relates to whether it's been written off etc., but what is the scam here?
The prices are usually too cheap 🤷‍♂️

"I'm getting a lot of interest mate.. can you send a deposit?"

"Can you send the deposit through this link to a definitely not dodgy website"

I presume you are talking about FB Marketplace? It's pretty much unusable for cars due to the sheer number of scam entries.

Frogstomp +1

They'll ask for payment before you've seen the (non existent) car.

I bought a car off there a couple of years ago and it was easy to search. Now unless you're very specific it's almost impossible to filter out the scams. Easiest way to spot them is the account usually has 10+ cars for sale, not sure why Facebook can't spot that and just freeze the accounts.

Because they don't care and it drives (ahem) traffic to FB so they can serve you adverts. The excuse will be that they provide only the platform and it is up to you to be safe.

FB marketplace is the wild west.
From at least a 3:1 / scam:real ratio on car buying (or campers for me more recently), to a wave of 'buy your driving licence / MOT / Fake Insurance here'.
It seems there is NO responsibility or proactive work done by Facebook to filter or prevent such things, beyond a few warning messages. I have been 'told off' by the automated part of Facebook for tagging posts as scams or illegal.

There's hundreds of these ads on FB and seemingly no way to report them.

Can you not set a reasonable lower price? I looked at motorhomes for half the autotrader valuation and was inundated by exciting opportunities, as soon as you look at a reasonable price they do seem to fall away. Didn't buy one though - I'm not stupid.
Bromptons are the same - selling hire ones is a popular pastime it appears.

Its FB all over. I've reported a few profiles, FB look at them and say they're ok and yet I get a bollocking for trying to sell a home brew kit on FB marketplace. As well as the "clean title" rubbish, its usually "really good on electric" for 2l diesel vans etc. Same crap text copied and pasted a million times. Usually if you look at the profiles of the people selling the stuff, they've changed their name and profile pics sometime in the past - loads of African profiles...

Had a look for the first time last night, as I'm vehicle shopping.

Utterly useless as it seems to be about 40% scams and it's exhausting trying to work out which might be legit.

Gumtree is a haven of honesty by contrast.

"Clean title" means there is no finance outstanding. In (most?) US states, the state issues a title of ownership/registration to you. If a financier has secured a loan against the car, there will be a lien recorded, and a note of this is printed on the title. If you pay off the loan, you have to get the bank to ask the state to remove the lien and remove the note from your title, and then you can apply to the state to get a new, clean title issued to you.

They also approach you from forums where you express an interest in buying something. I was after a car part that sells 2nd hand for between £800 - £1200. I was quickly pinged by someone who had the exact part, even though I had missed out an important model number in the request. His first question was 'I have one of those, unused. How much were you thinking of paying?' I suggested about £300 delivered to Southampton. Amazingly he responded with agreement on the price and a photo of the part - identical to a photo on ebay selling it for £1200.

I couldn't believe my luck. He even said he would send me proof of postage as soon as I sent him the money!

The definition isn't the issue - it's the fact that it is not terminology in general use in the UK and would be a big red flag for me.

"No Liens or encumbrances". Is another one.

Basically if there is a Facebook profile of someones granny selling fifty plus cars at ridiculous prices with the same description, it's a scam.

Must admit, i have used market place to sell 2 cars recently, with no problems what so ever. May have just been lucky.

I must admit it's difficult to weed out the genuine sellers though

You give them money, they don't give you a car.

As above, Facebook marketplace is a shithole, if it's not car scams its knockoff fags or dial-a-booze. Just needs the bloke doing cheap meat to order from the local supermarket.

I'm idlely looking for my next project car (P2 <2007 XC70 manual ideally 2.4T but will settle for D5 in white with black interior, decent branded tyres and good MOT history if anyone has one?!) so in no hurry. I keep looking at FB marketplace and autotrader, I know the price and value of Volvo stuff and the amount of 'half price' stuff on FB is incredible!

Not wanting to typecast or sterotype but Volvo are usually owned by aging well healed types not African Moss side scum landlords who this one appears to be owned by when you drill down into his FB profile.
(I know it's not a P2!)

Not sure if this photo is meant to be the service history?

Woah there cowboys,I think you may be doing it wrong 😉 😜 😆
A lot of things are from genuine folk, just trying to clear out space and move on things they no longer use.
As long as you do a bit of stalking searching, and don't go for high value/fashionable tech,I will be fine. 👍

Of course, as per any online selling.

It's the complete lack of ****s given by moderators that pisses me off.

I got a ban for inciting violence because I said something about hipsters needing a slap or some inane nonsense like that. Conversely if you're racist, homophobic, transphobic or any other manner of socially unaccptable things that's okay, there isn't even a route to report that or any of the other stuff I mentioned before. So I stand by my statement, it's a shithole, the online equivalent of Paddys Market. They don't care as long as Zuck makes bucks.

I just checked the FB profile on the guy trying to sell me the Porsche parts and the only populated page appeared to be his likes.
