I was in Rome in the 80s and think I remember seeing a clock which used water, weights and stone spheres to work. The story was that the clock was broken because someone took it to bits to see how it worked, then couldn't put it back together again.

Now this has popped into my head, however google is not my friend at the moment. So the question is this real or a figment of my imagination?

I like your thinking but, the clock I'm thinking about was built in the Roman times.......possibly.

Or possibly not. I asked my Dad, who said it was in Granada, Spain. So not only did I the city wrong, I couldn't even get the country right. 😀 Anyhow http://lifeteria.wordpress.com/2012/11/02/spain-road-trip-3/olympus-digital-camera-151/ The Fountain of Lions Clock.

It's been modded a few times. Dunno about the clock aspect.

Saw it last year. The Alhambra is lovely. Spanish adminstration of and customer service is abysmal. You'd get treated better if you broke in after hours and got caught.
